" Cortez and Garfias roomed together at Encina. Cortez took engineering, returned to Mexico where he became a "Jefe Politico". He got caught in a revolution and returned to U.S. He was with Shell Oil Co. and lived as a neighbor to us in Martinez. There were several children, the daughter Elena was the oldest, a small child at that time. Cortez Ortigoso, as he was known in Martinez, died some years ago. Garfias sent us a book he had written and several Christmas cards. Garfias is dead now".

Burr could probably give you more information should you care to write him. And he may have the book!

Am enjoying your contributions to the Almanac. And I thank you for "plugging"my book. I shall send the Editor a copy for review.

Anyway, Dave, you started something. I feel you will hear more about the incident as time marches on.

With all good wishes and highest regards I am,

Sincerely,

The next time you are down this way, both Luther and I would enjoy a visit from you. As you know,my wife is a friend of your brother, and we would certainly enjoy you and your family stopping by our home as well.

As ever,

Re: The lost volune of Garf from Mexico.

Mr. Jacobson:

First to identify myself. I am C. L. (Luke) Severy, Class of 1908. Garfias was a good personal friend of mine over the years. I remember the incident of Wentz hanging from the eaves of Encina Hall but I never knew or at least remember who pulled him in. Being a geology and mining student with four solid years of prescribed work right from the first class of the first year I had no time or inclination to study the gnomes of little people of Ireland which was Wentz's prime interest, so when Wentz made his big mistake I said to myself"no wonder". Now I am sure I would be more tolerant.

I have read Garf's book. It was a bit racey in spots but since it was published the New York stage and the Berkeley speech makers have used more four letter words than Garf would dare to mention. Mrs. Fred Fowler 1908 (Elsie Branner) had the book and loaned it to me to read. you might be able to purchase her copy from one of her sons who may have it now. I am sorry to say the Elsie is incapacit{caret: "at"} and is in a rest home in Los Angeles and I understand one of her sons lives near her. I think that would be John whos address you probably can get from the Alumni directory. By now you probably have purchased a copy or at least have had a dozen suggestions such as this one as to where you might find one. Anyway good luck and Best regards

Yours sincerely,
