From A dug out At no where on the front Date: Sept. 17 Hour: 10.30 am No. 11 via everywhere To The sweetest woman in the world, My Mother. I am well and happy altho four shells burst very close to me last night & I was in a gas area but the old nerve is O.K and altho this sector is full of grave yards I am still feeling fine I have a horse to ride now & am running a 40 C. railroad which work keeps me up all night & I am in charge

of quite a place here, 100 men and 100 horses being my share of this contest. I am sleeping in a very good dugout and altho shells come close all is O.K. I have seen several area battles you hear these German air planes at night all over head & they drop big bombs that look like this [drawing of bomb] fins this is about 18 in long. And I had 5 hit mighty near me last night in front very near a P.C. Love Jack
