wished to do— I have already Seen
one Ancient and one Splendid Structure
of the Kind— and with that must
rest satisfied— I therefore passed it
by notwithstanding 700 Years have
Rolled over its Gothic tower.
In passing on from Eastgate
(where I ascended the wall) toward
Northgate we pass a curious Tower
Calld the "Phoenix" on which is
Engraved in Stone "Chas 1st Stood
" on this Tower in 1645 and Saw
" his army defeated on Rowton Moor"
In passing North gate on which
there was formerly a "Keep," but
now a Simpler doric Arch with
Palisades, we find Several
Curious Resting Places. And one
Calld "Morgans Mount" seems as if
intended for the Stranger to upon
and view the Chain of Welch
Hills or mountains— which though
diminute bear Some resemblance
to our Alleganies— There is also
in front of what are now termed
the meadows a curious bulwark
Called the "Water Tower" which
about its mouldering base Still
bears the Marks of a bombardment
