Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

1st. mo. 1st. 1860 A very cold day; good sleighing; Robert Stabler called before meeting; Joe dined at Phil's; William went to Roger Brooke jr. in the afternoon; Charlie, Sarah and Warwick Stabler here to tea; Father went to R. S. Bentleys after tea. I got a letter from Mary Gardner.

2d. Very cold. mercury 3 above zero. Father at Clifton to supper; William at W. P. Millers after supper to a party. No one here all day.

3d. Another cold day; Father went to Rockville; Joe and William to Stanmore after supper to a party; Lucy and I quilting for cousin Henry Bentley. I got a letter from Anne Ahrens. The men getting Ice this afternoon

4th Cold and cloudy this morning. The men getting Ice; they got Ice all day the 26th of last month. Evening. Finished getting Ice. Lucy went to the Cottage this afternoon. Father and mother to James Stones after supper. Louis called on his way to the store. William went to a party at Olney.

5th. Father went over in Howard County; took mother to Cherry Grove on his way; brought her and Lucy home in the evening.

6th. Henry Hallowell dined here. William and Lucy called at Grove Hill in the afternoon; to Rush Roberts after tea

to a party: Father and Mother went to Dr. Howards.

7th. Commenced raining at noon, and rained till after night: Lucy dined at Phils: I went to Uncle Samuel's in the morning, to help get ready for the Club:

8th. A beautiful clear day: the last day of sleighing: I came home from Cherry Grove before meeting: went to meeting; Debbie Stabler dined here; Lucy, William, Louis Stabler, Debbie and myself went to the Cottage in the afternoon; brought Debbie to Phils after supper to meet her Father: we staid there about an hour and then came home: Joe dined at Warwick Millers, brought Fred Stabler home with him to supper, and went to Phils after supper.

9th. A beautiful clear day; Father laid up with a cold; I called at Harewood in the morning: Lucy and I quilting; Warwick Stabler here to supper; Edward Lea after supper.

10th. A cloudy day: Aunt Jane here in the afternoon, helping to quilt; Uncle Charlie here after supper: William went to Richard Bentleys after supper, to a party.

11th. Damp, and warm. I went to meeting. Mary M. and Mary H. Miller and William Bond and Kate here to tea.

12th. A cloudy day: Funstan of Alexandria lectured at the Lyceum; Joe, Lucy and William went, the subject was the "Harmony of the Sciences."

13th. I attended a Library meeting at Wm. H. Farquhars, in the afternoon; Aunt Lizzie here in the afternoon helping to quilt; Uncle Samuel here to tea; rained after night: Joe went to the "Burnt Mill" for flour.

14th. A sleety day; rained all day; nothing of any account transpired: We finished the quilt.

15th. A clear day; Oh how beautiful was every thing.
