ECLIPSES 1916

There will be five eclipses in 1916, as follows:

I. Partial of the Moon Jan. 19-20, visible throughout North America; size about 2 digits upon the southern limb of the Moon. The Eastern standard time of the phases is as follows: begins (umbra) 2:55 a.m., middle 3:39 a.m., end 4:24 a.m. Subtract 1h. for each time belt west of the Eastern - thus it will begin on the Pacific coast at 11:55 p.m. (19th).

II. Total of the Sun Feb. 8, visible as a partial eclipse on the Sun's southern limb throughout the U.S. except in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Philippine Islands. About 5 digits or less than one-half of the Sun's disk will be eclipsed in the Eastern states, from 4 to 5 digits in the Central states, and from 2 to 3 in the Western. The Sun will rise more or less eclipsed west of a line from near the southeast corner of Arizona to Fort Benton, Montana. At Washington, D.C. the eclipse will begin at 10:03 a.m. and end at 0:15 p.m.; Chicago 9:16 a.m. to 11:04 a.m.; St. Louis 8:57 a.m. to 10:51 a.m., New York 10:21 a.m., to 0:34 p.m.

III. Partial of the Moon July 14-15, visible generally in the U.S.; size 9.6 digits on the Moon's northern limb. Visible as follows: begin 10:19 p.m., middle 11:46 p.m., end 1:12 a.m. (15th), eastern standard time. Pacific coast at 7:19 p.m. or just after the rising of the Moon.

IV. Annular of the Sun July 30, invisible in the U.S.; visible in Australia, So. Philippine Islands, etc.

V. Partial of the Sun Dec. 24. A mere contact of limbs, and that in exteme southern latitudes.

PLANETS BRIGHTEST, MORNING AND EVENING STARTS, Etc.

MERCURY brightest as an eve. star Jan 15 to 20, and Sept. 6 to 10, setting near the close of evening twilight; also as a morn. star March 4 to 10 and Oct. 10 to 20, rising near the beginning of the morning twilight; practically invisible at all other times.

VENUS will be an eve. star to July 3, and after that a morn. star, being brightest May 24 to 30 and Aug. 6 to 12, and invisible July 1 to 6.

MARS will be an eve. star all the year, being brightest in February and dimmest the last of the year.

JUPITER will be an eve. star to April 1 and after July 27, and morn. star April 1 to July 27, being brightest Oct. 20 to 28 and invisble in March and April.

SATURN will be an eve. star to July 12 and after Oct. 24, and a morn. star July 12 to Oct. 24; invisble in July and brightest Jan. 1 to 10, and also very bright at the end of the year.

URANUS will be brightest Aug. 5 to 15.

NEPTUNE will be brightest Jan. 18 to 30.

NOTE:- When the superior plants, those exterior to the orbit of the earth, are brightest they are 180 degrees from the Sun, rise at sunset and are visible all night, and at such times they may be called all-night stars as well as eve. stars, for an eve. star should rise in the evening hours.
