1516th Meeting
Mary Lillian Moore had pictures to identify and questions. Who knew about Jean Coulter?
Born in Baltimore, she graduated from Sherwood in 1918, went to Wellesley and later, taught
at Sherwood and Sidwell. How did Clifton get its name? Beth was told it was a Welsh name
as was the name Thomas, its first owner. Who knows about Wolf's Den, the home of Mrs. Geo.
Bonifant? Betty Hyde would probably know. Who is Florence Bailey? No answer to this.
Betty Ligon told of a family reunion at Stone Mt., Georgia with 101 Ligons attending.
Nell elaborated by telling of a special presentation made to "Cousin Betty" at a family
banquet. Betty's comment - "I was just going for antiquity. Nell had a question - how to
reduce the effect of noise from New Hampshire Ave. Suggestions ranged from a solid fence
to checking with Dumbarton Oaks where they have been fairly successful.
Joy Shotts told of a newsletter that Ashton Nursery now puts out, and of a thank-you
note she had received from Meal on Wheels for the Association's annual gift. Joy also
said Camille Slade was now in Hickory Grove a part of Sharon Nursing Home having broken her wrist in a fall. Joy's
question - does anyone have the 1926 edition of the Womens Board Cookbook that they would
lend or donate to the Museum? Deb Willson and Beth Bullard both thought they had copies.
Caroline Hussman recited a rhyme that was useful when counting to forty. It was
taught by one Annie Whip who may have been from Baltimore. Caroline's question - can
clematis be rooted from a cutting? Sylvia has done this successfully.
Martha Ligon brought a newspaper report on Mother Goose, being re-edited by MacMillan.
The model for Mother Goose may have been an 8th century mother. Through the years historic
figures or incredible tales were related in rhyme and as early as 1697 the Tales of Mother
Goose was published. It now ranks 3rd in timeless literature.
Betty Grey read a memorial to T. Gilpin Cooke, Jr., a Friend to whom a Penna. Farmers
Fair was dedicated in 1977, a person whose ability to cope with everyday life in a rural
area was astonishing, a quiet man - the more effective because he spoke only as "the Spirit
moved".and had a talent for working with others.
Henny Bregliano had a locust contribution. She could remember during one of the
earlier infestations how the sows on the farm ate them. Henny also told how warmly church
people near Ozark, Alabama received Gordie when he was there and when she and Bob visited.
Mary Moore Miller shared some verse with us called "The Light of God Surrounds Me".
Committee Reports: Hospital - the Womens Board is getting ready for the Bazaar, expenses
were higher this year and Thrift Shop earnings have been lower, the Scholarship Fund
which
amounts to about $10,000 a year, has been made a separate account and can be used more freely
Membership - Betty Grey suggested we think carefully about new members. At present there
are two on the waiting list. Sandy Spring Museum - there will be 2 staff members on mater-
nity leave this fall, there will be a general membership meeting on Sept. 10 and an auction
at the end of Sept.
Announcements: the Hospital Bazaar and Supper will be on July 28th.
There being no other reports or announcements, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Seiler
* After 1926, before 1933.
