had been collared with radios in order to track poachers Females are more vulnerable
to
poaching because their movements are easier to follow.

Wendy Lawrence had been in Arizona for two weeks driving in search of some prehistoric
sites. She saw some very impressive cliff dwellings and said thunderstorms were beautiful
to watch. Asked if she didn't get lonely, Wendy said you stop being lonely after awhile -
it is such a magnificent area and with incredible light.

Mary Moore Miller read a poem of happiness - "my heart is like a lake with banks full-
brimmed..."

Betty Grey also had verse. "We should all take time to love, Whenever we may be;
Kindness is what the deaf can hear, And all the blind can see".

Chris Kolstad had been reading The Practical Cogitator by Charles Beard and had
found some familiar quotations such as "whom the Gods would destroy they first make mad"*
and "when it is dark enough you can see the stars". Chris wondered whose the voice
of the turle was. Answer - a turtledove's. (*corrected in typing later)

Kay Metcalfe having had creeping phlox that crept 200 ft. into an area where it was
not wanted, read an article byEllen Goodman on strangers growing in her garden where they
were not meant to be. Her message - accept the rightful place of accidents and learn to
co-exist with anomalies. Kay's question - how to remove a baby copperhead seen
in the garden. No specific answer but they are detectableby a "smell of cucumbers" apparently

Caroline Schauffler had a question about her coral bells that had bloomed white this
year as well as some columbine in the same bed. Perhaps they were reverting, but call
Brookside Gardens.

Mary Seiler passed around some ancient Egyptian faience beads that a friend had picked
up on an archeological dig in the 1920s and which Corella Page had just restrung. Wendy
Lawrence was wearing some modern faiencebeads which had been made in the same way.

Committee Reports - the Sandy Spring Museum Strawberry Festival will be held Saturday from
10-4. There will be many good crafts.

Announcements - Kay Metcalfe said the Index to Sandy Spring Annals is now available for
$8.40. Wendy Lawrence said there would be a Montgomery Potters Exhibit in the Fine Arts
Gallery at Savage. Elizabeth Ligon and Nell Johnsen had a joint announcement of the birth
of Lucas Emmanuel Ligon Bruno, Chick Ligon's grandson.

As the meeting ended, so did a torrential downpour, and members adjourned to meet with
Deb Willson at Homestone on July 2nd.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Seiler
