1513th Meeting
Nell Johnsen told of a trip with her mother, nephew and niece to see Conner's grand-
daughter Phoebe perform in gymnastics. She is 14, lives in Highland Park, Il. and has as
her coach Bela Karoli (Mary Retton's coach too). Phoebe has been very successful in many
competitions.
Henny Bregliano saw Bela Karoli on 20/20. He mentioned Phoebe Mills and said how good
she is. Henny had gone to a wedding at the Naval Academy chapel (Cookie's daughter) -
the chapel is very popular, having a wedding per hour and one every half hour in June.
It is beautiful as is the music and the arch of swords. Henny's mother went to hops at the
Academy years ago.
Betty Grey quoted James Metcalf's article on people's hatred for one another - it is
not in God's plan for us. Betty's question: where can she get a ball of heavy string for sew
-ing up bags of wool after shearing sheep? Perhaps White's.
Elizabeth Ligon read the poem "Robins Went A-Wooing".
Wendy Lawrence had a poem from Modern Maturity about disorder - a sentiment which seems
to accompany this busy time of year.
Beth Bullard and Jim have been taking an Audubon bird-lore class. Birds have a chest-
bone which no other animal has because they require strong muscles for wings and flying.
They had fun dissecting a cooked chicken. Birds have two types of young - those that need
care and those that don't. Many birds migrate at night, but how, is still a mystery.
Peg Gibian had gone to the National Gallery and come across a delegation from the
French government - ladies wearing beautiful clothes, very chic with lovely hair-dos.
Caroline Hussman read Browning's "Reverie" on April.
Jane Stabler had found a poem in Modern Maturity called "Country Church on Monday" -
with its "silence like a prayer".
Martha Ligon shared a letter from a friend about all the February things - winter snow
melting, buds emerging, and all the exciting spring things happening - "are your skunk
cabbages up?" - "Happy Springtime"!
Reports of committees: "Help" - Elly Frieda is the new chairman;
Sandy Spring Museum - April trip was discussed, May Festival is to be held on May 16th
with quilts, crafts and old photographs, will be at the Community House and the Museum.
Announcements: Sheep and Wool Festival will be held on May 2-3 at the Howard County
Fairgrounds.
The meeting adjourned to meet with Caroline Schauffler on May 7th.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Seiler, Secretary
and Wendy Lawrence, Secretary pro tem
