Birds:

There were several bird stores. The President
told of watching three crows go after grounded a hawk.
This brought the story of a hummingburd who
chased a crow. Flora has a family of bluebirds
inhabiting the bluebird house. Henny sent by
Helen a letter from Tom HallowellXXXXXXXXXX and Barbara
Hallowell
dscribing a day at a bird refuge; the
children were eager birders; Among the birds cited were
clopper geese, sand pipers willets, snowy egrets, hero
herons of all colors, water snalkes, ibcis; they
also went through miles of burned woodlands
and saw wild plants including pitcher plants.
Elizabeth reported that two Canadian geese who
had nested at Westown for years were both killed,
This was done by hunters, a teacher took the remaining
eggs and goslings hoping to raise themXXXXX the latter.

Questions: Mrs. Weske asked about transplanting
lillies of the valley. She was assurred she could
do this any time.

Frances Thomas who had no question was asked
in turn to comment on their new house in Kent County
at is a Quaker Neck Landing. He reassured us that
they were not leaving Sandy Spring except for week ends
and ended up making us all want a wharf right
out side our door, a river room and a river view.

John Weske told of seeing American holly in
a little German village in 1911, planted at the
station, given by a XXX shipowner resident who
traded with Baltimore and developed a love for holl
holly, taking some home and planting it.

John also wanted to know if you can grow
things under walnuts; Mr. Hutton said larkspur is
a natural, but not tomatoes, whereupon jJack
Bentley
reported that he had wonderful tomatoes.

Mary Moore Miller had no question but reported
that she had deomonstrated the effectiveness of
ferticlizer on grass; theboy putting it on missed
large strips; the result is a streaked lawn, not so
green where he missed.
