H/6/1952 -1-
Homestone, June 3, 1952
The first meeting of the Horticultural Society
at the changed hour of 5.45 p.m. was held at "Homestone".
After a pleasant outdoor supper the meeting
was called to order by Robert Miller in the absence
of the president and vice-president. The minutes of
the May meeting were read and approved.
Elsa Thomas read an article on "A Garden of SongBirds",
by Alfred Runkle, bird lover who became interested
in birds after they completely destroyed his blueberry
crop. He claims that any one can attract all the birds
they wish by duplicating the birds natural habitat.
He has several acres which contain 5000 different plants
on which the birds feed. His theory is that birds migrate
merely for food and will remain all winter if the
proper food is available. Birds get their vitamins from
fruits and berries has been found from examination
of their droppings, they also need fat and startch
just as humans do. Anyone who enjoys watching birds
can easily attract them by duplicating Alfred Runkle's
plan.
Elizabeth Ligon kept us chuckling with excerpts
from an advertisement in the paper entiltled, "How
to Grow Thousands of Flowers without Dirtying Your
Hands". ---this add for a new liquid plant grower
supposedly makes plants grow to jumbo size in minutes,
believe it or not, due to atomic energy radio
