H/8/1925-1-
Avalon
Sept. 1st 1925.
The August meeting of the Horticultural being
held at the Maples, the house of our Sect'y,
she was excused that day from writing the
minutes, and Mariana S. Miller reluctantly
consented to serve in her place. After the reading
and adoption of the minutes of the previous
meeting Cornelia H. Bentley read from "the House
Beautiful", an interesting article on the cultivation
of Columbine and Phlox, two perinnials [perennials] if
properly cared for give great pleasure and
satisfaction.
Milton Bancroft as the other reader, told
us of the "Worth of the nut tree". The planting
of which can be compared to the purchasing
of a good bond that in the course of time will
yeild [yield] a large income on money and time invested
beside being useful for shade or ornament as
well. Black and English walnut & shell bark are
recommended & there is a variety of pecan
that can be raised in this latitude. The
"Stabler English walnut", as it is known & grown
at Sunnyside, is the latest in the United States
to put out in the Spring, and is quite a valuable
strain, as it is not caught by the frosts.
