We felt it both a privilege & pleasure to
have the Horticultural meet on August 1st.
in the lovely home at Riverside, & to have
with us again our member from
Riverton who not before this season had
felt equal to attending our meetings.
After the reading and adoption of the
last minutes, Mary Green in her mother's
place, read us of Nature's Queerest Tree" -- It
was discovered in Damara Land, South
West Africa by a German botanist &
named in his honor the Welwitschia.
mirabilis. It lives to be 100 years old
& often attains the diameter of 6ft., but
is never more than a foot in height!
It belongs to the evergreen family & bears
small cones colored a brilliant scarlet.
All that shows above ground are two
leaves 6ft. long & 2 or 3 feet wide &
these are the only ones born by the plant
throughout its century of existence.
