The other clipping Mrs. Davis sent was
entitled "Chrysanthemums for Everybody",
& it gave a list of hardy varieties which
the N.Y. Botanical Garden warrants to grow
even under rather unfavorable conditions
& by unskilled gardeners. May is a good
time to get them out, & if the soil is
poor enrich it by bone-meal or manure.
About two weeks after planting, when the
young plants have become established, the
growing tips should be pinched off, & again
a little later, if plants are growing too tall,
but not later than last week in June.

If aphis appears on them, the best spray
is a nicotine preparation. If they are
troubled with mildew or black leaf spot,
both can be checked by dissolving 1 oz. of
sulphide of potassium in 2 gals. of
water & spraying with same.

From Dr. Nichols, the 2nd reader, we
heard of the new National Arboretum
that is to be at Washington D.C.

Seeds are being gathered by the American
Forestry Association from the historical
trees of this country & the trees raised
from them all to be selected & planted
at the National Capital, every state being
