After the minutes, the first reader
of selected articles Catherine Janney
read from "Real Things" by Edward S.
Holden an interesting "real thing" of the
different forms of Plants, their habits
and the age to which some of them
grow, and of the feelings suggested
by trees. The Oak is strong and sturdy:
the Lady-birch is slender and graceful
the Cupress is gloomy; the pine solemn
the Red-wood majestic and they give
us feelings pleasure, or it maybe gloominess
or pain. Some trees like the Redwood
and the "Big trees" of California
grow to a great height and are 1000
years old. Olive and fig trees live
to a great age, and oak trees live
many centuries."
2nd Article of a man who makes
a hen set whether she wants to or not
he puts her head under her left wing
and whirls her around until she is dizzy.
Next morning he gives her 1/2 teaspoonful
of whiskey and she sits till the eggs
hatch! He tried the treatment on a
turkey gobbler and he hatched 25 chicks
but would not raise the turkies.
