roses in August?
A member sowed Kale last August
had it to eat all winter It went to seed
early this spring; the new seed gave
us "greens" all summer and we still
had it for the men last week when
the threshing machine was here.
We are told that Lima beans planted
in the house and set out at the time
we usually plant the seed, will bear two
weeks earlier.
We had no walk in the gardens because
of the rains. A member who had been thro'
them the previous day wrote of them "as
a lovely flower garden and a splendid
truck patch; the double row of Lima
beans, flourishing cucumbers, sweet-pota-
-toes, squashes, corn, melons etc. and the
terraced flower garden, with its variety of bloom
was a typical "Grandmother's" garden
The Secretary was requested to convey our
sympathy to John Bentley, and our hopes
for his recovery in the near future.
Readers for next meeting, Kate Janney, F. Hallowell
The business being over our President
was asked to tell us about his trip in the
West. He gave a glowing account of the Roses
in Portland, Oregon. Magnificent bowers, hedges
trellises everywhere. Some measured 5 3/4 inches across
The flowers of California were beautiful but had
no perfume. He enjoyed Yellowstone Park with
its wonderful geysers and tame wild animals
and a game of snow-balling, with his
grand-son on the 4th of July.
