71st Meeting.

After an absence of nearly 2 years the H I again assembled at the house of W H Brooke 12/23/76 & was most cordially welcomed by both host & hostess. Wm S Bond as foreman called to order at 5 1/2 o'clock. The absent members were W W Moore, A M Stabler, A G Thomas, P S Stabler & wife, J & A Hartshorne, & J S Moore & wife. whose failure to be present can not be attributed to the weather, for the air tho' cold was bracing, the roads were smooth & sleighing fine in great contrast to their condition last year.

Our visitors were E Hopkins & sister, M B Thomas, John Bentley Sam Hopkins, Debbie Brooke & Lottie Pleasants. and altho we spent a delightful evening, yet as an association for mutual improvement, we seem to have made but little advancement, as a glance at the following questions & answers will show. attempt chickens, or raise Turkeys & Ducks instead? Much counsel was given & she left at liberty to pursue her own way. ducks can be bought of W J Schofield. Three spoonsful kerosene to 1 qt of meal is another remedy for cholera. How many raise Turkeys & is it profitable Those who have had experience expect to continue raising them which may considered proof that it pays. How did Sue Thomas manage her chickens this year? She gave them her personal attention. What is the price for picking Turkeys? Some give the feathers & giblets, others have paid 8c a piece Shall Carrie Brooke attempt hard soap at this season? It was thought well for her to try it; many receipts offered. "H I hard soap" well recommended, also a receipt of the box of " Con Lye" made without boiling. Shall Mary Bond protect her roses at this late day? Yes with manure, leaves & pine boughs. How to keep Lillies so that mice & other enemies cannot destroy the roots? Many plans suggested all of which had been tried without success by the unfortunate interlocutor. MB Thomas has a Lilly that has been growing & blooming for years in the identical earth in which it was planted never having been moved from the pot either in summer or winter. This method is much less complicated, requiring less thought certainly that the plans usually recommended, therefore why not adopt it.

How long should meat remain in salt? From 3 to 5 weeks.

What is the custom in regard to servants bed time, and having a light in their rooms? 10 o'clock was thought to be a reasonable hour at which they should retire. Families should have their rules, in regard to these matters, and should require every member to adhere to them.
