Oak Hill
299 Meeting
4-2-1898
The 299th meeting of the Home Int. was held at Oak Hill
on the 2nd of April 1898.
At our next meeting on the 2nd of May at Tanglewood
this society will have met three hundred times.
300 Home Int suppers will have been prepared and eaten.
More than 30 times 300 or 9000 questions will have been
discussed, wrestled with and answered and by means of
this accumulated wisdom 44 children have been successfully
raised and 18 grandchildren giving good promise for the future.
While if even the ghost of the many many times 300
chickens, turkeys, veal cutlets etc etc which have graced the
tables could appear suddenly in Cuba, the hearts of the starring
insurgents would be made glad.
The weather upon the 2nd of April was cold and windy
with occasional showers so few people ventured out for
a walk but they reported fine lettuce in a hot bed.
peas up in the garden, onions planted and 154 little chickens.
A letter was read written by Mary Hallwell Brooke in 1863
during the war, describing a visit they had from some of
Gilmines' guerillas. The present was scare made them seem
more impressive.
The probable reason why roses in tin cans are not
doing as well as those in pots is less evaporation and as they keep
too wet. Mkight be put in ground now and cut back hallos
a glass jar over them.
Privet hedge planted last year should be cut back
to about 4 inches.
It was condsidered safe to plant a few apple trees as
[illegible] has [illegible] scale yet among his.
