use any of the prepared foods advertised
for chickens tho their own preference
and inventions in that line
are varied: Scalded meal with red pepper
buttermilk [illegible] salt, table scraps
and wheat are all used and we were
advised to administer a dessert spoonful
of kerosene to a quart of water in their food
twice a week to cure gapes. Carbolic acid
and air [illegible] lime inhaled will also
kill the worms in the wind pipe and
sometimes the chickens too!
The Home Interest thinks it not worth
while to go to the expense of building a
chicken yard at a distance from the
present one to unable the fowls to get rid of
the gapes; just put the coops in a fresh
place far from the old spot or give up
raising chickens for a year or two.
While on the subject the big yellow
hens were praised for their lady like
manners, this some people think they
break their eggs while sitting.
Hen eggs six weeks old have been known
to hatch but the fresher the egg the better
its chances.
