Seattle, Washington.
August 3rd, 1896.
To the Hon. City Council,
of the City of Seattle:
Gentlemen:- Your petitioner, the Queen City
Cycle Club, most respectfully represents that is desires
to establish and maintain a cycle path from the central
portion of the city along the east side of Lake Union,
across the Brooklyn Bridge and to the State University.
There are improved streets which with slight repairs
will serve this purpose as far north as Mercer Street.
Between Mercer Street and Louisa Street (at the south
line of the Denny-Fuhrman addition), a distance of near-
ly 1 and 1/2 miles, there is no thoroughfare which can
be adapted for cycle use except at great expense. The
road-bed of the Third Street & Suburban Railway and an
old wagon raod winding through hills and hollows consti-
tutes the only present means of travel between Mercer
and Louisa Streets. North of Louisa Street to the Brook-
lyn Bridge Eastlake Avenue (formerly Green Street) is
already improved so that a small expenditure will adapt
it for cycle purposes.
Desiring to avoid the unnecessary steep grades a-
long the present route between Mercer and Louisa Streets
your petitioner has caused surveys to be made and has
located a new route with easy grades along the hillside
above Lake Union. The proposed route diverges from East-
lake Avenue (formerly Albert Street) just north of Mer-
