1903 Thursday 23 April Dunphy got away when the wind came in about 10am but was most of the day getting out of sight the wind being light and variable Mr Wolff arrived during the forenoon Afternoon engaged with him and Mr Thiel
Friday 24 April Mr Wolff went over with Mr Thiel in the Steam launch to Herbertshohe having arranged to see the Governor about some matters Sent over the boys with him in the boat with a new boy from Nodiep recruited by Dunphy to sign on Boat came back soon after midday with note from Mr Wolff to the effect that he did not consider the time opportune for an interview with the Governor
Saturday 25 April At anchor Matupi Carpenter & Selon doing odd jobs about the vessel getting things ready for sea. Intended going over to Herbertshohe in the morning to see the Governor but heard that he would head away the NorthCoast on Monday & Tuesday and would call here on his way back

33 Log of Canomie Matupi 1903 Sunday 26 April At anchor Matupi No work going on Cloudy and wet most of the day Johann Albrecht came in yesterday and left this evening
Monday 27 April At anchor Matupi Busy with the books. Selow and crew getting runners fitted & new Tank painted and chained etc. Mr Thiel went over to the North Coast and arranged to send word by noon tomorrow if the Governor is coming here
Tuesday 28 April Got off new tank and filled up the others with water At noon heard that the Governor is to be here tomorrow night remaining over Thursday. So did not start for Herbertshohe Got runner finished Sillow working afternoon at Jib out haul and traveller and putting copper on the Gib boom where it was cutting One of Hernscheim & Co's boys from Kumuli that came in the Nippon returned

34 Log of Canomie Matupi 1903 Wednesday 29 April Thursday Remained at anchor Had talk with the Governor along with Mr Thiel about matters at the Admiralities and found that he was favourable to our news but Schneider having promised a station on St Gabrial stands in the way
Friday 1' May The Governor having gone out for the day heard that he was going over to Herbertshohe in the morning 2 P.M got underweigh and beat over to Herbertshohe for the purpose of seeing him there and also Mr Wolff Strong South Easterly wind as much as the vessel could carry. nearly on beam ends in one little whirlwind that caught her Anchored at Herbertshohe 5.50 under the 4 hours

35 Log of Canomie Herbertshohe 1903 Saturday 2d May Saw the Gazelle passing in to Matupi early in the morning. 10 am the Launch came over with the Governor Went on shore and saw the Governor arranging with him that the licenses and leases are to be continued next year as at present Got Komuli mail at the Hohe it having come over in the Launch Learned that Howard and three out of his crew of four had been killed by the bush natives when buying taro on the main land opposite Bililu in the Corea The Corea being found on shore completely gutted with masts sails rigging gone but the hull not much cut up Capt. Griffith however was unable to get her off up to date of writing Capt Wohlers and Kahis very drunk to abusive told Wohlers that there was no news yet from Capt Griffiths about the money promised for the trip up in the Nippon Going on board the Canomie at noon saw the Nippon beating up. and sent Tulva on shore with a note to Wohlers saing[sic] that if he came off I would settle with him as Mr Schmidt was in from the Admiralties and would be able to settle the matter

Spoke with the Governor again and acquainted him with the news from the Admiralties re Howard. Nippon came to an anchor with Mr Schmidt and Willie Fiji on board Supere sent up to Paporatawa with a letter to Mr Wolff

36 Log of Canomie Herbertshohe
1903 Sunday 3 May Mr Wolff came down in the morning. Explained to him the result of my [...] with the Governor Gave him a letter setting forth the terms on which the firm of Hamilton & Wolff held the leases etc for pearl shellers and Trepang fishing for the Hamilton Pearling Co and had it endorsed by him. Mr Wolff wrote out report of Howards death in German for the Government and took it on shore to give to the Assessor. Afternoon when getting ready for a start Schneider came on board to get news of the occurrance at the Admiralties Learned from him that Kahrs has left him 3.30 got underweigh and proceeded to Matupi anchoring there about 5 P.M Nippon to follow in the morning.
