5th. Tuesday. Stiff today somewhat. Suppose the long walk along the beach yesterday. We went about 1 1/2 miles & got some pretty shells. Wrote to H. this morning & to Mrs. Brassington. Willie posted them. Cloudy day. 6th. Wednesday. Went out stock-riding with John down to the Bridge - Then across to the railway - then back to the bridge again to meet John & Will Then S. & I rode back to the station with a [...] card for Alf saying we would go up on Saturday. Arthur W. is going then. Letter from Alf saying not to delay any longer - none from H. 7th. Thursday. Quiet day. Ma & Mrs. M. went over to Heidelberg. I wrote to Katie & Annie G. Practised 2 hours. 8th. Friday. Our last here. Sorry we have to leave it. Told S. today I'd like to stay here & play till the day came. Got packed up. Cold again, lovely moonlight 9th. Saturday. Started for station at 4. John drove us over & we had to wait there for the train till 20 to 1. Got into Gladstone & to 'Blue Bell' at 1/4 to 2. The place seems so strange now to me - so many new buildings. Ferris welcomed me as of yore. Minnie has developed into a fine young woman - quite distinguished-looking & her baby is a fine fellow. They must be busy in that place. Arthur W. was there & went by Premier with us. She left at 4. It was a lovely trip up. I had no idea the Narrows were so long - we were 3 hrs in them - very pretty too crossing the Harbour from Gladstone. Cold also. The moonlight was very pretty. We reached Broadmount at 10 & Rockn. station at 11.30 Percy W. was there, so we came up together in a cab to Alf's. [?Lucy] read a telegram from H. - on the way up - to Arthur - saying he had no time to write to me - P. thought I must be hard on him. Alf & Alice up to receive us : we have the little verandah room - rather small - for our belongings - Alf looks well. This house is a good big one. Had bother today about our boxes. They were whisked into the van at Annandale - mean t[sic=to?] get them at Gladstone - had to do without our shawls all way up - worried about the[underlined] box until we got to Broadmount - then pounced on it there & brought it into our carriage none the worse. 10th. Sunday. Horrid night. Hardly slept any - must have got a chill again - sick & horrid. Stayed in bed till dinner-time nearly & sent for some of Davidson's medicine by young Strachan - they live next door - neuralgia too & horrible everywhere. Ella & Irene W. called to see me this afternoon. E. is going home to Westwood this week & wants me to go too. Think I will. 11th. Monday. Nasty still. It's cold too. Alice wanted us to go down to the Art Exhibition it's only open this week. So we went down for Alf first & he went with us. It seems queer walking about this place with death hovering over us - another case to-day & saw the cab taking a girl who has the plaque to the plague hospital - housemaid at the Criterion - the 2nd. case there : wore carbolic garters round my legs - it smells - carbolic chiefly - sulphur-tar & bad gutters, are abominable. I came home quite sick. This is[underlined] a dirty town. Wrote to H. Turning or hoping to turn out boxes to-day : little Theo is a mischief. but a dear little soul. Phyllis is [...] improved. Grandma Smith & Willie D. came in to-night. Going to Westwood on Thursday 13th. Wednesday. Alice's At Home afternoon. Mrs. Jackman came to spend the day with her baby. Mrs. Potts also & the Diebain girls came in. Alice deceived me into showing my box of valuables. I didn't want them shown atall - plenty of time by & by - Feel well today. 14th. Thursday. Horrible again - had no sleep from 1 to nearly 6 this morning - head like a pot today & feel so sick - didn't get up till 10. Grandma Smith had lunch with us & we all took the bus & went down the city - shopped - & then walked to Alf's & then to the station where the Well's came along after a bit. Ella & I had the carriage nearly to ourselves. Got there at 8.30. all serene, Ethel Willes looks quite fat. 15th. Friday. Felt bit husky this morning - slept pretty well last night. Had walk this morning. Mr. W. seems to ignore me altogether. so taken up with Ethel : she's perfection. 16th. Saturday. Had walk - then practised some. Wrote to H. Mr. W. writing him too ; from what Ethel says he doesn't take any more care of himself than he used - after all I told him. Wrote very plain & touching[underlined] to him. 17th. Sunday. Had long walk this morning with Amy - out again by myself this afternoon - feel quite 'de trop' this time - things seem altered quite from other occasion - perhaps it's my fancy - I'm closer to them now. 18th. Monday. Walk again twice today - Practised too. 19th. Tuesday. Amy going to town to stay with Irene who wants to be innoculated - she was going down next Sunday - she'll stay in there till the opening of the organ supposed to be on the 29th. - I'll miss her - she & I have had such sparking together like old times. Trying to get jacket for Edie's baby finished to send by her - Wrote to Ina. No letter from H. feel bit mad. 20th. Wednesday. Amy went down by the midday train. I got jacket finished. Got letter from H. had been delayed somewhere. - He has a house taken somewhere on Spring Hill* a nice one - & new - for 12/6 a week. Miss Braun's people are leaving it. H. pays rent from the 1st of next month. It must be very convenient - from what he says - 21st. Thursday. Shortest day. How I used to hail this day. Another letter from H. Miss B. is to be married on Saturday afternoon - Lottie [?Relts] is taking her place. Raining today. Practised 3 hours. 22nd. Friday. Letter from Ma. Says to stay if I think it wise & she doesn't want to come up. Edie Lees was married a week ago (by a letter from Ivy) & they had just returned

from this honeymoon (a week) in Maryboro. Janet & the children are going to Gladstone next month Annie has invited them. 'Twill do them all good. 23rd. Saturday. Wrote to H. good long one - had walk in afternoon. quite warm today : They want me to stay & help in a concert coming off next week - if I care to - neither Amy nor Irene will be there & they want someone to pay the overture so - it will be an excuse to stay - I can get my ticket extended - by paying difference. 24th. Sunday. Quite a hot summery day - had walk early - then rested & had bath before dinner - in the afternoon - had walk a little way along with Ella, Ethel & baby - Mrs. Spalding called while we were out - we met her - she congratulated me very highly - Herbert would make a very[underlined] good husband! 25th. Monday. Walked - had practice - 26th. Tuesday. Washed some, had walk - turned cold again - letter from H. giving me account of Miss Braun's wedding - She wore cream brocaded silk - & long veil beats me hollow - I'll have nothing like that. 27th. Wednesday. Went out this morning & got lots of mushrooms. Went to S. of A. to-night to try over Mrs. Bartholomew's songs : It was pretty cold. I through with her alright & tried "Balmoral" but the piano is very stiff. 28th. Thursday. Another letter from H. We went to see Mrs. Spalding this afternoon. Wrote to Ma. I don't think it's any use her coming up here she wouldn't enjoy it I know. She'd be quite offended at the lack of appreciation & ignoring of my merits. 29th. Friday. Little Alf's 14th. birthday. Recital & opening of organ in town Cold - had long walks - early too & practised some. 30th. Saturday. Walks - short ones - Wrote to H. Told him I'd better give up this exam. too. Wrote to Ma too as Mr. W. is going to town tomorrow. More mutual admiration society entertainment tonight. 1st. July Sunday. Rested this morning. Ethel Ella & I went for walk across the railway this afternoon & carried the baby between us. It was a lovely day. Mr. W. went to town at midday. 2nd. Monday. Had little walk them washed. 3rd. Tuesday. Raining. Letter from H. He had been innoculated the day he wrote & was feeling pretty bad then. Glad he had been. I shall feel safe soon. Ethel goes to Rockn. to-morrow. 4th. Wednesday. Rained very hard last night. cleared today. Between us girls we got Ethel's things down to the station today - very muddy - I lent her my goloshes - said "Good-bye" to her. She is staying a week in Rockn. but I may not go down on Monday - may stay till Wednesday. if nicely[underlined] treated. Sent letter to Ma by her. 5th. Thursday. We miss dear little Eileen. Ella & I went to the S. of A. for me to practise my piece. Ma sent me wool & linen for drawn-thread tray-cloth & the book with Scotch Airs in. Think I'll play the Irish Airs tomorrow night. Feel so well these days. Mr. W. came home tonight. Theo sick. 6th. Friday. Practised this afternoon. Cold day too. Out at night Mr. W. Ella & I went. Lots there. I bit disgusted. Mrs. Bartholomes & a girl played the opening piece. I came in at the interval to the accompt. of [?boots]. 7th. Saturday. So glad last night is over. can shake a [?flee] leg now. I think they thought I was put out at last night's reception but I didn't care except at being shifted. Haven't got any harm so far. - will feel it tomorrow Wrote to H. Told him how more grieved I was over his remark than anything else - Out walking. 8th. Sunday. Had short walk. this morning. Then rested & had long walk to Sebastopol & back - 5 miles there & back - I must have got a bit of a cold on Friday night. Feel it in my head & after eating too much pea-soup for dinner felt puffed up & tight & came home with an 18 carat headache. Felt better after tea. 9th. Monday. Alright today & slept well. Practised some - Letter from Ma in their parcel tonight saying Theo was better : she has had bronchial pneumonia - poor little soul. It would have finished Alf had anything. I wrote back telling her I would be coming Friday. Have been tempted to stay till then - shall miss this place & all my lovely walks & sleeps. 10th. Tuesday. No letter from H. suppose he'll send them to town. Had walk. washed - sat out in the paddock. 11th. Wednedsay. Wrote to Mrs. Wilde. Sarah Mann & Jim S. Heard a remark tonight as we were going to bed that hurt me muchly & made me resolve to do a certain thing to-morrow. 12th. Thursday. My last day here. made the most of it too - went out early to cemetery to measure some of Hobler's grave for Mr. W. Took Mrs. W.'s (first) "In memorium" into Ma to read & the paper, this pen, on my way home sat on log & wrote a very straight letter to H. Said all I ever intend to say to him - now or never - May God forgive me if I have been harsh but I am doing it for the best. Wrote to Alf tonight asking him to send for boxes tomorrow. Went out again this evening with Ella & Ethel to the church to practise again (Ethel). Saw a beautiful sunset. 13th. Friday. Practised some. Packed up & got ready for the mail train Sorry I'm leaving now. Mr. W. actually kissed me before we left home!!! Ella & Ethel came down to see me off. Got into town at 3. Saw Perry at station. They think I look well.

14th. Saturday. Went down with Ma to Stewart's & got travelling dress - green serge - got brown too but think green will be nicer - brown will keep. crimson serge tea-gown - print zephr dress - print wrapper. We couldn't decide the wedding dress - leave till Monday - Amy can come - Came home quite done up - Amy came over tonight. 15th. Sunday. Went to Pres. church with Amy in [...] to hear the organ. Very nice Dull day - went over to see them this evening. Percy is a great wag. Amy saw Mr. Evans at tennis this afternoon & she told him I had been inquiring for him. Said he "happened to meet" me at the train & the steamer. 16th. Monday. Went down with Amy this afternoon & chose the wedding dress a fuchsia pattern. silk lustre. Got some green silk (liberty) for her - she preferred it to ribbon. Got home late - [?rack] - Telegram from H. Got my letter - not writing 17th. Tuesday. Had a bust for a sewing girl this morning - found [?his] sisters place - thinks she can come next month - 2nd week - Amy over this afternoon 18th. Wednesday. Took Phyllis for a walk - Ma too - called at Amy's. 19th. Thursday. Down town this morning - Lottie D. came in at dinner time. wanted me to go to sports with her but I felt too nasty - sore throat - 6 weeks. since I performed last & nothing[6 underlined] yet. Alice went down town so Ma & I minded Theo : he was very good : Mrs. Hackings & Miss [?Theacher] called while she was out. Sent post-card to Edie that I'd come on Tuesday next 20th. Friday. Throat & chest very sore - must be in for big cold - how horrible when I was getting on so nicely. Went down town & going into these cold shops must have made me worse - been very cold these 3 days. Sent back Mrs. Locke's letter to H & enclosed a scrap. 21st. Saturday. can hardly speak for cold - went over this morning to Wills'. Threatening rain. I'm dreadfully disgusted. 22nd. Sunday. In bed all day. Horrible day too - rainy - muggy & so dense.till dinner. Feel about as nasty as can be. 23rd. Monday. In bed till dinner. Then out & had a walk down street in the sun. Sent post card to H. that I'd be going Mt. M. tomorrow. Letter from H. No difference apparently but I suppose I'll have my answer at Mt. M. Feel better but cough starting now - old beast - Took big dose of oil this morning. Might do two duties. Things are looking serious. Mary G. would tease me finely if she knew. 24th. Tuesday. Hooray. Oil did it. Got ready & went down to catch Mt. M. train at 10. The change may set me up - but I feel very weak & nasty. Got up there at 12. Such a pull up in the train - they put on an extra engine to go up Razor Back & thereabouts - so slowly they go too - very novel - took nearly 2 hrs to go up. Jim there to meet me. Drove home in cab. Jim thinks I don't look half the girl I used to. Edie looks well - Hazel was very shy at first but not so Claudie : he's a pretty child - fair curls - dark eyes - nice skin & lovely white teeth - Hazel is very like Edie tho' she was supposed to resemble me but I don't think so - she's dark. The baby is a plump boy - not like the other 2. Mrs. Lisle - Beattie Smith that was - came up this afternoon - she has 2 children I went down to the Pist & came home very done - cough bothers me. This isn't so nice as where they used to be - too low down - 25th. Wednes. to 4th. August Saturday. Got rid of old cough in a few days. Had to sleep on the stretcher in outside room tho' after the first couple of nights - I disturbed the poor baby too much. Got some of their good milk to drink every day. Horrid weather nearly all the time - close - so foggy & thick - smoky - threatening rain all the time. Only got out for 2 walks & went to see Mrs. Lisle & Mrs. Fisher on Tuesday & Friday - Such pulls up those hills & I carried the baby nearly all the way & back - must be stronger - I grew quite fond of the children tho' Claudie & Hazel were little mischiefs - but dear little kiddies all the same. The baby I felt quite sorry to leave - used to put him to sleep every night & I called him a little flirt - he did so liked[sic] to be hugged & kissed - a good baby too - & very healthy - their last & best - Jim says. Poor Edie I don't know how she manages with them all such patience too. She's the one wife in the world to Jim. He displayed some of his old crotchety spirit while I was there - she's very wise tho' & doesn't worry him. He's 'a' good old sort all the same. Asked him to come down & give me away. says he'll bring Claude. I'd like them all here to see him. Had long talks with Edie when we could get the chance - about things of the past - I felt most astonished ..! Mrs. T. apologised for her coldness to me that time !!! says she has regretted it ever since. Dear Edie - she's dearer & sweeter than ever. there's no girl like her anywhere - Jim & Claudie saw me away on the train at 2.30 I reached here at 4. Ma to meet me - lots came by train too. Feel very well. Hope I keep so. Girl can't come until 13th. so I need not have hurried so. Jim was lamenting that I hadn't seen the Works but with the cough I thought it better not to. Lovely day & nice weather now I've come back. H. answered my letter at Mt. M. It knocked him up as I thought. 5th. Sunday. Out to church - cold & windy - Stayed to communion. I like Mr. Youngman. Tired this evening. Have had nice day - 6th. Monday. to 15th. Wednesday. Got what linings & trimmings I needed at Stewart's. Got another girl to start on Ma's black dress. Only 3 weeks

for Miss Todd to do my things. She started on the 13th & seems to be doing very well. I got invitation cards printed at Bulletin Office - rather nice with envelopes to match. Alice P. can't come up for lack of funds & had a letter from Sarah & M. to say she wouldn't come without her. So. - Don't know if the Skyring girls will come, but wrote to Ella & said I'd like Hanny to come too. Ella W. down for a week. She went back last night & left me 2 nice serviette rings with our respective names on little cards from herself & Amy. Amy goes to Brisbane after the wedding. We have fixed it as per invitation for Friday - 7th. - that will allow the week to prepare. Mr. W. is to ask for the whole day - & they are all coming - early in the morning & Mrs. W. a few days before. I'm glad she's coming. I wrote specially to Ethel Wills the other day telling her what I wanted. Told H. about the single bed business - he bucks - wont have it at first - I told him I'd pay him out - so I will. Wrote him long letter on Friday - 10th - & as his didn't come till Saturday - should on Friday & he wanted to know lots of things - I wrote again on Monday sending the 2 together - this letter writing does take up a deal of time - told him. I'd like muff chain for a present - His pater sent him cheque for £5 as wedding present - Said as a joke in my letter last. that I wouldn't mind the same present from someone - so the poor thing evidently took me up & sent me[underlined] cheque for the same. Told him. I'd like £2 - to help things along - so shall send the other £3 back - do for my muff chain. He's giving Amy an opal ring - & Ivy a [?curt] bracelet Ella Irene & Arthur were over on Monday night & Dibdins last night. Had Mr & Mrs. R.L.D. & Mrs. Smith to tea on Saturday. Got piano on hire at Munro's for the month at £1 & cartage 3/6 - not bad instrument at all. Alf is glad to have music again. Had letters from Jim Stirling - Jack Wishart - Wrote to Arthur (P) - Mr. Mann. Katie Allanby. Have to answer about 6 others before this month is out. 16th. Thursday. Alice W. called in on Tuesday night to say Good bye & brought me 2 serviette rings with our names in - from herself & Amy Didn't do much today. Getting ready to go & see Mrs. Wood this afternoon - & when we were about ready to go out in came Mrs. Potts Alice went out but was not in time to catch Alf. Amy came in tonight. She's only down to try her dress on - going home tomorrow : Quite hot day. I'll be all up after for the 7th 17th. Friday. Got some washing done & went down with Ma to get things - Stewart's were shut soon after we got there so we went into Gallagher's & got such nice things - pretty & uncommon embroidery for my grass lawn - nice umbrella - shot green & pink - the very thing - for 9/3 - pretty pale pink corded silk for vest for the going 'away coat - & pair of green kid gloves to match. Miss T. started the coat & [...] today - she has done very well so far - tea [...] - red - pink print wrapper - pink zephr dress - Letter from H. (nice one) He'll be very angry I return the money so - just as well - I'll have to keep it. Janet sent me only £10 this week instead of the £15 I expected. Says he'll get a fortnight - perhaps more - that'll be lovely. Feel so dreadfully tired today : think am getting cold - Alice got down town after washing poor little soul : it's too much for her - No girl yet - Amy came in to say "Goodbye." 18th. Saturday. Feel not nice today either. Alf brought home at dinner time today - a case of & 2 [?chucks] - 1 1/2 doz eggs. two pot plants & a silver teapot for me from Arry. Hope I didn't look like cadging that from the tone of my letter to Ellen. Shall have this for use - Raining some. another wet Sunday I suppose 19th. Sunday. Lovely day - quite cold too. Ma & I went to church. rested all afternoon : it's enough to go once a day all that distance. 20th. Monday. Wrote to H. nice letter from Katie Gibson : she doesn't forget me. has improved wonderfully in her writing. She's a true girl is Katie 21st. to 29th. Wednesday. Miss Todd made (has) my going away dress as well as a tailor I'm sure : looks so nice with the pink silk vest - the grass lawn too looks very nice - would make pretty bridesmaid's dress : got narrow baby ribbon - shaded orange to interlace in the embroid ary insertion - with rosettes to finish off - & skirt with insertion in each side nearly down to bottom where it frills out. She has nearly finished my wedding dress too - Ethel Wills sent up veil which will do nicely : it has a slight tear but that doesn't matter - the orange blossoms are rather poor so they'll do to decorate the bodice with & I get a fresh wreath. Went to see Mrs. Jackman last Friday & got loan of her shoes Alice had

bad cold all last week : this work is too much for her : I feel on the verge of a cold too all these days : sneezing & pains in head & feel so[underlined] tired. better yesterday - much - Alice got girl yesterday - Joy!! & woman in washing to-day. This house needs someone to do scrubbing alone & washing up Last Saturday the Dibain girls took me & Miss Simpson over to the mountains Had lovely day - couldn't picnic up in the Glen part on account of big fire but got a walk there. Was up to their place last Tuesday night for tea & spend the evening. they took me out & the children for a drive in the afternoon to the North Side. - Ma & I went as far as Congregational church last Sunday: too hot & late to go further : enjoyed service muchly too. - Letters from H. in one a copy of what he intended sending Mr. Youngman so I made sundry corrections & sent it back. In last Friday's letter he offers to take me to Sydney & Blue Mts. if I wish. Would like too in one way - but the long train journey would take all pleasure out of it & I wont be [...] then either : besides I don't feel up to travelling round & round - would much rather take a trip up to Townsville & see Arthur. Poor old chap : had nice letter from him enclosing P.O. order for £1 - wishes it had been more : says he can't possibly come - can't afford it for one thing & can't leave his business - So - I think if we went up there it would do him good & us[underlined]. Don't know what H. will say to it. Ought have answer this Friday Says he doesn't care about going down to B-e by boat. - We can go to Emu Park all the same on the[underlined] night & come back. next night & leave for Townsville on the Saturday. Got letters from Connie S - accepting - C. Dibain - same - Harry & Ellen S. refusing Mrs. Allanby & Meme - enclosing cheque from Mr. A. for £1.1.0 : he must have been pleased - Mrs. Brassington - good one - full of advice & loving wishes & sending me worked centre cloth - Mrs. Wilde - nice long one giving me all Bingera news. sent me book of Whittier's poems - just what I wished. - Grandma Smith gave me cheese-dish the other night with scoop - Wrote innumerable letters - H - 1/2 dozen - May Wiles - Sarah Mann - Ellen S.- Arthur - Jack Wishart - Jim Stirling - Katie Allanby - Janet & Ivy - Edie - & must write to Katie G. yet. My time is drawing near. Do hope it's a fine day. H. says the furniture is in £42 worth & you'd wonder where all the money came in! anyhow he's getting plenty in now - £27 the other week. & half next week. "Praise God from whom all[underlined] blessings flow" - He wants to come up a day earlier but I wrote yesterday & told him not. I wont have time to look at him. Got word yesterday to say that Will & Ivy will be leaving on Saturday. Must give myself time to go about with them. [doodled T] 30th. Thursday. Miss T. quite finished my dress now : it looks very nice & she has taken great pains with it. Alice & I went to see Mrs. Wood (out) Mrs. Potts (out) then Mrs. G.B. Jones - found her in. Horrid windy day & dusty 31st. Friday. Hot these two days - like summer again. Only one week left! Went & saw Trissy C. this afternoon - she has a nice home & looks well - Alice went too. Then we went to Grants. They are not sure they can come next Friday 1st. September Saturday. Pres. Flower Show on. A horrid day. Blowing - hot - & dusty - for the morning & turned quite cold in the afternoon. Went down town & got hat - pretty white one - & cap for Ma. Irene W. brought Mrs. Bob Harvey over to us - we rather wouldn't - so busy finishing Mrs Todd up. She has made Alice's dress too - she certainly has worked well. Went into Miss Jones' to learn drawn-thread work Train will arrive at 5 tomorrow morning - lovely - glad Will is coming with Ivy - she would have been lonely. 2nd. Sunday. Ma & Alice went down early to meet train : they arrived here about 5 - I got not up - Ma up nearly all night to be in time. They had to wait nearly 10 hours in Gladstone. Ivy went with us to church we reached the Wesleyan this time. Mrs Youngman says she's coming on Friday - glad : Rested all afternoon. Had singing - thought to go out to church tonight but changed our minds. My last Sunday - seems like when a man is going to be executed. 3rd. Monday. Seems strange that we haven't to be sewing & flying round. Will did odd jobs for Alice : she got all her curtains rigged up - I took Will & Ivy down town - Wrote letters to H. & Katie G. Letter from H. He 's quite willing that we go to T. Posted Arthur's letter on Sat. he ought get it Wednesday. Had "Evening" here tonight : had great fun too : Wills' : Dibains' & Miss Strachan Got lovely presents from D's tonight a pair oil pictures from Mr. D.
