afternoon - Harold & Jess away. Wrote to Herbert to night. Letter from Ivy Willie is going to Brisbane to-morrow. I'm real glad. It will do him good. Glad I wrote to Alice - they telegraphed to them to come down to them 7th. Saturday. Terribly cold ~ wind like fun .. Trotted over to post my letter. He will get it on Tuesday morning & see Will. Fixed up the girl's marks this morning. Got on with my bonnet this afternoon. Mrs. G. is going to Brisbane Monday with Mrs. Boreham ~ Mr. G. goes too. Takes them to trot round. They got the tennis court fixed up - it's very nice ~ a Mr. Power from town came up & is to stay over to-morrow. Don't like him - he is very much gone on Miss Nmn. she does go on in a silly way with him. Miss S. was also asked & came into my room this afternoon & would stay ~ guess they blamed me for keeping her but noone asked me to come out & she wouldn't go out. Mrs. W. came in & talked too so altogether I felt all right Had company at night. I have to play all accompaniments at the concert next Friday. Wish not but can't help it. Mrs. W. & I are going to play a duet. 8th. Sunday. Church morning. Mr. Morris preached ~ full church. Went not out after. Miss N. & Mr. P. seem gone on one another ~ I don't envy her choice - the two pairs went for a walk & didn't come back till after 6. 9th. Monday. Mrs. J.G. came to the school this morning to see whether I'd take the 2 boys - Becker's ~ & Norman ~ T'will mean my poor little Saturday broken into for half the day but can't help it - anything to earn a little more. Dear knows when I'll get into town now. Miss N. went over to Mrs. J's to stay today. Miss S. went for a ride this morning & at dinner time said She had heard something about me but I didn't ask her what. 10th. Tuesday. We were asked up to Wilde's to night to tea & spend the evening - Mrs. W.'s birthday. Ray didn't come till nearly 1/2-5 for his lesson so it was 6 when I got home & had to dress then ~ raced up in time for tea - they sent word down that they wouldn't commence without me. Enjoyed it except the last bit ~ He[underlined] asked me on the quiet to come & have a game of Crib. inside with them. A. G. & Mr. Martin - don't think elle l'aima. After tea Miss S. astonished me (she told me after dinner she had a question to ask me would I mind) by asking me point blank was I going to be her cousin - I really didn't think she meant that at first as I didn't know anyone knew or guessed a thing about it how W. got to know I can't tell - anyway I hastened to free her mind of that delusion she wanted to know why not as I told her - age - 11th. Wednesday. Had yarn with Miss S. to-day - she seems to have taken a fancy or I imagine so - to me - there's something about her I like - she is a lot like our Arthur in her ways too - She said tonight talking about B. I can get him back for you - he was is such[underlined] a nice boy - I thanked her - I want no more "boys". Would he had been more of a suitable age - it would have made all the difference in the world - Well he's gone now - can't be helped - 12th. Thursday. Over to the Hall to night trying our parts in the tableaux M. W. Miss Stevenson from Brisbane & I are to be the old maids dressed up fantastically. with Sam for admirer. It will be ridiculous. 13th. Friday. School as per usual in the bottom of the Hall - Rehearsal there this afternoon but I stayed not for it - Miss Castles maid same up yesterday afternoon & Mr. Boreham & Mr. Power were here for tea - Miss Curtis & Linda C. came after tea. I had to go off alone - the others were such a long time getting along - after all had to wait for Mrs. W. to play our duet - Lots there - Miss S. sang Garden of Sleep with the tableaux - all the girls little & big lying amongst the flowers - they couldn't see it properly from below - the next was better - Miss N. & the Dirty Boy - Pear's Logo picture encored - then our very[2 words underlined] own - Maids of Lee - Miss S. sang the first verse & the curtain drew back & lo! Maud C. Jean Sterling & T. Gibson dressed

most youthfully - hair down - & all the young men they could find as admirers. Then she sang the 2nd. & the curtain drew & lo - we 3 - dressed everyhow - hair powdered - faces darkened - A.W. did us up - Mrs. G.'s bonnets trimmed hideously on - I with Miss N's black glasses on the end of my nose - Miss Stev. with an ear trumpet. M G. with flames on her nose & all of us looking cross as could be - Sam dressed to kill & acting it splendidly - the people shrieked & we had to appear again - I felt so silly - they said we looked splendid - I especially Dance after - I looked on for 2 & then went & felt so nice 14th. Saturday. Down at Hall giving the 4 boys lessons - didn't get back till 11. All the girls & W. went over to Walker's for a drive - noone asked me to go - indeed there wasn't room so I laid down till 4 - then had a lovely ride with Tom & Katie out past Roebuck M - enjoyed it immensely. Afraid I'm getting "hereintish" hate to talk to anyone now - hate meeting strangers - just like to be alone - Feel altogether different lately - since that letter came - it seems to have wrought a change in me somehow - not for the better either - sorry too - Miss S thinks I'm quieter than I was - spoke quite concernedly to me about my being so quiet - she didn't like to see me so - told her I had reason - 15th. Sunday. Home all day. Tired. Glad of rest .. W. drove them all to town this afternoon. 16th. Monday. Miss S. not going till Wedn. Wrote to Ma. Little Mother will be thinking I'm sick or something. 17th. Tuesday. Not home till this evening. Too long hours - must have differently somehow. 18th. Wednesday. Miss S. went this morning. Sorry - I like her & I think she likes me - she reminds me of our Arthur in her ways & sayings. W. & I alone for dinner. M. in town too & Mr. G. 19th. Thursday. Saw in Courier last night Mrs Powe & child & Mr. P. passengers north on Tuesday. Suppose it's Art & Min going back - hope poor Art is better - they must be stopping at R-n. - & Ma will most likely go down to them - she won't get my letter - Tired head every night these days. Glad to get to bed at night. 20th. Friday. Thanks be - last day. home late as usual - Wonder whether I can keep this on - when the hot weather starts I'll feel it ~ 21st. Saturday. Over at Hall for lessons this morning - home before 11 o'clock time to get my [?deeds] in order - nice quiet afternoon - Mrs. W. down - Mrs. B. is undergoing an operation to day in the Ladie's P. Hos. Brisbane she'll be there for 3 wks ~ the baby has had to be operated on too - I'm thinking from what I've heard lately - & this afternoon from Mrs. W. that they think now what they ought to have thought before about Mrs. B's marriage Mrs. G. won't be home for another month at least. Mr & Mrs. Ellison & baby arrived this evening - she is to stay 2 or 3 days. Mrs. C. told me that I'd another 2 wks old now - nasty things not to tell me - I'm disappointed it's not a boy 4 girls! far too many! 22nd. Sunday. Church this morning nice!! Rested all afternoon - Home at night too. Nice days these 2 - feel happy. 23rd. Monday. Mrs. E. to stay till Wednesday. Gentleman from Brisbane arrived tonight - a Mr. Burnett ~ a widower - they teased me[underlined] about him - said I'd better set my cap for him as if I wanted an old man with grown up daughters. 24th. Tuesday. Could have smacked Mr. G. this morning - made such personal remarks before that man this morning - he's old - & not my style at all - besides I told them yesterday he wouldn't look at me while M. was round - neither he does - I want nobody - am harder than ever to please Raining all day. Letter from Ivy last night - baby came 11th. Aug - Ma has been telegraphing down wanting to know if I'm sick. she's had no word. 25th. Wednesday. Cleared. Mr. B. went this morning. my chance gone - Had nice evening last - Mrs. B. went to day too. We are alone again.

26th. Thursday. Gave J. & E. their lessons today instead of Sat. Tired but no headache. Wrote to Art. 27th. Friday. M. & Miss Norman went to town - dance on at Curtis's tonight. Mr. G. & I alone. Old man G's 84th. birthday ~ all women folks - there Made list of what I want & want to do. Thought of coming back by canetrain Monday morning but glad now - W. is going down in the buggy & I can come back with him & the girls. 28th. Saturday. Art's birthday - 30th. I alone am left in the 20s now. Went down town this morning. Got down at 10. Got to J's & then had to go on to Miss McNemay's with my 2 dressesthat[sic] want retouching. On the way took Grace her bonnet. She seemed pleased very thing she wanted. Saw the new arrival. She ought have been a boy - dark headed features & such a quantity of thick black hair. plump too. Dinner & then went off down town to do my business. Had so much to do that barely got it done before 5. Had tea said goodbye to Grace & Jo & then .. Well Mabel & I went down town. Walked about a little & saw them at Blackie's & found them. We had to wait some time for Charlie W. who came home with us. He & I had the back seat to ourselves & had a nice time. Got home at 11. Willie must have had a lively time of it in Brisbane. John M. & Boyne were with him everywhere. He only saw H. twice. Mrs. Raff was there so I suppose he was all taken up with her. This afternoon in Blackie's he persuaded me into buying a violin I didn't mean to get one till Xmas but he said I could learn the notes in the meantime 29th. Sunday. Home all day. Feel tired & a headache. Yesterday seemed so short - so much to do - but excepting it is to be so then then I wouldn't care if I never went in - won't again till 9th. Nov. Had to stay in this morning & meet two visitors - a Mr. & Mrs. Gillem from Newcastle - they came about 1/2-12. So I entertained the lady till the rest came from Church - she was very nice - a lady - no uppishness about her - M & W. took them over the mill in the afternoon. Mr. G. went to Sharon - I had a fearful headache. all day - they were 2 of the nicest people I ever met - asked me to come & see them too. 30th. Monday. Had time to myself this afternoon going to have every Monday & Thursday. five visitors no less came to day to dinner 31st. Tuesday. Letter from Ma last night - she's all right. Is atill at Mt. M. I was surprised thought she'd be in R - to see Arthur. He wrote to her saying they were going there for he didn't know how long - Poor Arthur - Whilst in Sydney he got a letter from the firm at T. saying that on account of his health & the bad times they had decided to dispense with his services & gave him a recommendation in Sydney. Health money - position - child all gone - may the Lord comfort him - strange that I should have thought of that next "Casting all your card" to put in his letter - I believe it is - meant to be so - it all points to that - I do hope he gets something easier 1st. September Wednesday. Late home 2nd. Thursday. Miss Stevenson came here today - to stay - they all went out tonight so I had the coast quiet & wrote to Ma - & Mrs. Brassington 3rd. Friday. All hurried topsy turvy over there today preparing for anniversary on Sunday - got out earlier, had to give Ray his lesson at house. The girls in town tonight to - convesaniree for Mr. Bowes 4th. Saturday. Went over to Mrs. James to give the lessons. All here

It really does not matter so much my dear whether you are married or unmarried, if you can live with dignity & do good to others. ~ A woman may have as happy, useful, & distinguished a life married or unmarried. this afternoon to play tennis - Mr. Power came from town too. Care less for him every time I see him - I played not - made a bootee nearly : At night there was corrobboree[sic] for the Kanakas over the hill so we all went. Il y êtait jeour dîner et semblait tout agréable - Le soir il et Mr. M. venait nous joiques. Je & W. anarchait tout seul tout le chemin - je pense qu'il ne l'aimait par parce qu'il alla a la maison toute à bonne heure. vraiment j'en suis bien aise. I feel as tho' I were doing right. Kate & Jeani home alone 5th. Sunday. Church morning. Anniversary (S.S) afternoon & night. I went not in afternoon - Great crowd there at night. Nice meeeting. Mr. Ellison up. This day year B. & I spent the afternoon together. Wonder if he remembers 6th. Monday. S. Mrs. Stirling junr. & Jean were over to night 7th. Tuesday. Mrs. Ellison, Mrs. Haines & Mr. E. & Mr. B. came this afternoon. Lantern Views at night with song. Good many there I hardly saw one - never more do I go to those things. Mrs. Bowes has altered so - she's miserably thin - must have something wrong with her. 8th. Wednesday. Mr. E. & B. went back this morning - the ladies are staying on. Not home till late this evening. They went up to Wilde's & I had to mind the kid 9th. Thursday. They went home with Mr. G. this afternoon so we are alone once more - Mr. G. & Una Davidson came down tonight & we had some fun - had Sam Shick & mesmerism or magnetism - made each other do things - it was fun. Consequences too. Letter from H. 10th. Friday. Busy day - home late - all the thanks I got for minding the youngster the other night instead of going to bed when I felt so tired was that they Mrs. E & B. thought me very wicked because I didn't offer to mind him - pooh - she ought to mind her own kids - I'll not again - that's certain - will tell her some time too. 11th. Saturday. Lessons. Miss Stevenson & I went for a ride over the Falls this afternoon - it was lovely. 12th. Sunday. Church morning. Miss S & I went for a walk & a read down to the river bank then (she went to Mrs. W's & I to Wilde's. - he was away but came home in time - Mr. Muller came there for tea too much to my surprise - Mrs. & I went to church after. 13th. Monday. School - off this afternoon. 14th. Tuesday. 15th. Wednesday. M went to town to-day with Miss to a Ball & Miss S. to Mrs. W's so I & W. were alone till to-night when she & the other boys went down too. 16th. Thursday. M. came back this afternoon. I & the kids had breakfast 17th. Friday. Feel my old enemy all this week - can't tell why - they are thinking of going to Wabana to-morrow - the buggy will hold four - M. W. Miss Norman, Mr. Power & Miss S. I suggested riding if I could get the grey but Miss S informed me this afternoon that Aleck wanted him for Monday to ride with me - don't know how I'll get on with the double journey. 16th. Saturday. Lessons this morning. & ready early & off at 2 sharp buggy left @ 20 past - one got there at 10 to 5. few minutes before them - not bad but I suffered - Pippie was horrid - they

A. & W. wished me to ride her as being better than Laddie but I knew I wouldn't enjoy it no more I did & F's saddle was quick too seemed for me consequently I suffered much on one side - otherwise didn't feel bad at all - don't know how I'm to get back tomorrow - It's lovely up there. - feel better already - ride did me good too in spite 19th. Saturday. Feel not very lively - we had a lovely ride in the truck up the plantation & then walked to church - 7 of us - wonder when the same lot will meet again - Arthur G. is going back to Germany soon. Last night Miss S & I slept in the same room - she offered to ride part of the way home for me if I liked so nothing loth I said alright so she started off about 2 - we left at 10 past 4 - expecting to catch them up any minute I put on my riding things - but lo : we saw them nowhere they reached home before we did - Miss S. had gone to church - the drive down was lovely - I wondered how ever I was going to ride - blessing I didn't have to - she said she[underlined] felt bad but she couldn't have been to ride all that way like that. Had a lovely time - it is a pretty place - I feel all the better for it. Il [...] ma [3 illegible words] 20th. Monday. Feel so nice to-day - Miss S. was down today & said she doesn't feel stiff in the least - that's a fib I'm sure - & that Pippie was every bit as nice as the grey - that's another - & the saddle fitted her exactly maybe Wrote to Ma. Got letter from Art - such a nice letter - just like his old self. he feels much better he says & will return to T. probably about the 26th. That letter made me feel happy all evening. We had a carpet dance in honour of Miss Norman - Gibson's over & Miss N. Mrs. Shirley & Jean - Wildes & a gentleman visitor & Mr. Muller - Norman Menzies - we had such a nice time - everyone enjoyed it - I'm sure I haven't enjoyed anything so much for a long while - danced the Lancers with W. Mr. & the visitor reading my hand said I'd been crossed in love twice - not far wrong 21st. Tuesday. Dull oppressive day. Went over to Mr. James this evening to say Goodbye to Miss Norman - she's going tomorrow - we'll miss her - stale & flat as a pancake - noone seemed to have any life - such a contrast to last night - blame the weather - was glad when it was over 22nd. Wednesday. Hot today - feel my old enemy these two days - don't know why. 29[sic]th. Thursday. I & the girls were going out for a ride this afternoon but storm came on. 23rd. Friday. Storm this evening - pretty sharp - another this afternoon - our ride doomed again. Letter from Edie - dear old girlie - they miss Ma 24th. Saturday. Lessons. lovely day - cool & clear - Kate & Tom & I went for a ride this afternoon - I rode Laddie for the first time - he goes well - a bit rough but a very easy walk & trot. Went up to Wilde's at night & enjoyed myself - always feel better after a ride. 26th. Sunday. Church twice - Wilde's - Mr. G. their visitor - & ~~~ Mr. Muller were here for tea - & - Arthur Wilis - Mr. M. sat beside me at tea & we had a good time. he went to church too ~ think he likes me - 27th. Monday. Feel horribly out of sorts ~ got up this morning with a big headache. hardly any sleep last night - Mr. G. preached last night - a long sermon - & it mustn't have agreed with me. Glad it was an easy day - felt miserable all day & worst of all - my enemy all the time - never felt it before in the day time 28th. Tuesday. Horrible day for wind - it blew a gale & towards night got worse - I felt bad all day - can't eat either - Wrote to Ma 29th. Wednesday. Feel not nice to-day either - head aches again - M. in town - getting her to get blouse for me - Miss Beatson here is going to make me a dress - white silk alpaca
