brought us his pack of cards - those girls must have shocked the poor man to-day -
I had to apologise ~
14th. Thursday. Feel horrible this morning - couldn't sleep last night - sat
out in the sun a lot today & felt better - storm came on after dinner - we
thought Mrs. W. might be coming this afternoon so got them to send the buggy
down but who should come back but Mr. William G. Albert & Mr. Purdy - the
missionary - Mr. Methven came in tonight & we had a good game of cards - Miss S.
had the joker 15 times - I felt a lot better at night - another storm came on - pretty
bad - 15th. Friday. Another horrid night - perhaps it was too close as Miss
S. & the 2 girls had to sleep in my room - Tossed & moaned & groaned all night - felt
real bad this morning - Miss S. was very kind - she is a real good unselfish little
thing ~ she seems to enjoy herself too - tho' I am such a dull companion - yarning
with this one & that. Mr. G. took us for a lovely drive this afternoon - about 15
miles - all round Watana - came home via Gin Gin - didn't know whether we
could go out at all for the storm clouds - felt very bad before leaving - must have
had fit of indigestion - drank cup of hot water & in about 1/2 an hour felt better & by
night felt pretty well - Mr. G. asked Mr. Macdonald in to play cards with us - we
didn't know whether he would come but he did & I liked him very much - he has
an abrupt manner but kindly - wise-looking too - I fell in love with his moustache.
must be a good sort too as he sends money home to his parents in Scotland repeatedly -
Had some fun with Elsie about Miss S. & Mr. Methven this evening
16th. Saturday. Another wretched night - worse than the last - to improve
matters discovered that my cigarettes were all finished so had to wake Miss S. up
early to open the letter she had written to Mrs. W. & ask her to look in my box
for the packet & bring them up - felt abominable all morning - want of sleep
these 3 nights I suppose. Sat in the sun all morning - Storm threatened again
never have had a chance toget[sic] out atall[sic] - perhaps I shouldn't have come here the
air is so strong. Mrs. W. & baby came by train - Mr. M. came in at night for a
game but we couldn't play much - Eric was cross - Felt much better tonight
17th. Sunday. Much better today - good sleep last night - perhaps because only Elsie was
in my room - perhaps because Mr. M. left me his watch last night. Miss S. & Kate
went to church this morning & got bogged & discovered that Mr. M. wasn't a
gentleman but that Mr. Mac. was - Rained lot last night & all this afternoon -
shame that we couldn't get even a walk out. I did longtoget[sic] into the freshair[sic]
& see something of the place too - Going home in the morning
18th. Monday. Up early - feel lot better - suppose the change is just beginning to do
me good now - We went in to the Office & said Good-bye to Mr. Mac - he's a good
sort - said he was sorry I had been kept in so much - he had intended to take
us for a drive to Central Mill yesterday afternoon. I like him much better
than Mr. M. - left a vase of rose-buds on the Office table for Mr. Mac. Mr. M.
will be taking them to himself but noone will guess that I put them there
Got home before 12 & had a ride home in the baker's cart. Dave Se[...] came to
meet us - I rather like his face but he is a bit of a larrikin I think - stumpy
chap - M. & I went up to Mrs. W's for the afternoon - Shower came on & I had to
get home un Mrs. John G's buggy as it was passing - got wet too a bit - Dr. W.
came tosee[sic] me this afternoon after we had gone - my room has been
tidivated up & things shifted - I didn't know it - Company at night - Mr.
G. is going to Brisbane however en route for New Zealand - to the Conference -
Mrs. Stirling & family are going home too - Got surprise yesterday by seeing that.
Wilde's were going to town to live - he is going into partnership with EG Nott - thinks it will be a rise for him & more beans - shall miss them but the temptation will be removed
19th. Tuesday. Started school this morning at 10 - 2 r. W. came in to see me - thinks I look better - feel
lot better except weak & lazy. Raining so much got Lizzie to send me my dinner
20th. Wednesday. School. feel very tired after work - but better in every way.
Party at Roebuck's tonight - all went except W. who came home late from town very hot
