most youthfully - hair down - & all the young men they could find as admirers. Then she
sang the 2nd. & the curtain drew & lo - we 3 - dressed everyhow - hair powdered - faces
darkened - A.W. did us up - Mrs. G.'s bonnets trimmed hideously on - I with Miss N's
black glasses on the end of my nose - Miss Stev. with an ear trumpet. M G. with flames
on her nose & all of us looking cross as could be - Sam dressed to kill & acting it
splendidly - the people shrieked & we had to appear again - I felt so silly - they said we looked splendid - I especially
Dance after - I looked on for 2 & then went & felt so nice
14th. Saturday. Down at Hall giving the 4 boys lessons - didn't get back till 11.
All the girls & W. went over to Walker's for a drive - noone asked me to go - indeed
there wasn't room so I laid down till 4 - then had a lovely ride with Tom & Katie
out past Roebuck M - enjoyed it immensely. Afraid I'm getting "hereintish"
hate to talk to anyone now - hate meeting strangers - just like to be alone -
Feel altogether different lately - since that letter came - it seems to have
wrought a change in me somehow - not for the better either - sorry too -
Miss S thinks I'm quieter than I was - spoke quite concernedly to me about
my being so quiet - she didn't like to see me so - told her I had reason -
15th. Sunday. Home all day. Tired. Glad of rest .. W. drove them all to town this
afternoon.
16th. Monday. Miss S. not going till Wedn. Wrote to Ma. Little Mother will
be thinking I'm sick or something.
17th. Tuesday. Not home till this evening. Too long hours - must have differently somehow.
18th. Wednesday. Miss S. went this morning. Sorry - I like her & I think she
likes me - she reminds me of our Arthur in her ways & sayings. W. & I alone
for dinner. M. in town too & Mr. G.
19th. Thursday. Saw in Courier last night Mrs Powe & child & Mr. P. passengers
north on Tuesday. Suppose it's Art & Min going back - hope poor Art is better -
they must be stopping at R-n. - & Ma will most likely go down to them -
she won't get my letter - Tired head every night these days. Glad to get to bed at night.
20th. Friday. Thanks be - last day. home late as usual - Wonder whether
I can keep this on - when the hot weather starts I'll feel it ~
21st. Saturday. Over at Hall for lessons this morning - home before 11 o'clock
time to get my [?deeds] in order - nice quiet afternoon - Mrs. W. down -
Mrs. B. is undergoing an operation to day in the Ladie's P. Hos. Brisbane
she'll be there for 3 wks ~ the baby has had to be operated on too - I'm
thinking from what I've heard lately - & this afternoon from Mrs. W. that
they think now what they ought to have thought before about Mrs. B's marriage
Mrs. G. won't be home for another month at least. Mr & Mrs. Ellison & baby
arrived this evening - she is to stay 2 or 3 days. Mrs. C. told me that I'd another 2 wks old now - nasty things not to tell me - I'm disappointed it's not a boy 4 girls! far too many!
22nd. Sunday. Church this morning nice!!
Rested all afternoon - Home at night too.
Nice days these 2 - feel happy.
23rd. Monday. Mrs. E. to stay till Wednesday. Gentleman from Brisbane arrived
tonight - a Mr. Burnett ~ a widower - they teased me[underlined] about him - said I'd better
set my cap for him as if I wanted an old man with grown up daughters.
24th. Tuesday. Could have smacked Mr. G. this morning - made such personal
remarks before that man this morning - he's old - & not my style at all -
besides I told them yesterday he wouldn't look at me while M. was
round - neither he does - I want nobody - am harder than ever to please
Raining all day. Letter from Ivy last night - baby came 11th. Aug - Ma has been telegraphing down wanting to know if I'm sick. she's had no word.
25th. Wednesday. Cleared. Mr. B. went this morning. my chance
gone - Had nice evening last - Mrs. B. went to day too.
We are alone again.
