[centred] Pr
forty-seven and forty-eight in
England made many hearts tremble ...
our[s] among the number. Many were
in those years unnaturally aged ...
They will never be forgotten.
It was a wonder to father and me
how we passed through such se-
vere trials ... Father was so tried
and yet so brave. Those terrible
exercises told more upon my ner-
vous temperament than father's ...
Sometimes I have reflected upon
myself for not being a better help-
mate but dear father has always
told me that under heavy trials
I was a great help to him.
Of course landing in a new country
brought difficulties, and new
exercises of mind, and many
a time notwithstanding discom-
fort &c &c ... we never regretted coming ...
God will not upbraid me ... however
if I did not love my children so much
I should not suffer so much on
their account ... To be happy and joy-
ous if my sons [crossed out] (and) [added above] (or) daughters are
unhappy appears to me a thing im-
possible. Still they belong I trust
to a heavenly Father who is infi-
nite in compassion and whose
mercy endureth for ever.
