To the Honorable the Colonial Secretary from the Bench of Magistrates at Ipswich relative to the appointment of a President to preside at the Court to be holden for the Revision of the Electoral List for the District of Ipswich

30th May 1851.

Sir

In compliance with the 21st paragraph of your Circular of the 15th March [added above] (May) 1851 relative to the Collecting of the Electoral List for this District, we would beg to state for the Information of His Excellency the Governor that in consequence of the whole of the Magistrates of this Bench being interested and for the first Time entitled to a vote for holding a License [sic] to Depasture Stock they would on that account wish that a president should be nominated by His Excellency having no Vote or interest in the forthcoming Election.

Neither this Circular herein quoted nor the Electoral Act, recognises such an appointment as this.

The Senior resident Magistrate who may be present at any Revision Court, is by the XX Section of the Act appointed to preside -

The Governor is empowered to appoint persons to assist in the revision of the Lists, in the event of a deficiency or anticipated deficiency of Magistrates, but no such deficiency is herein alleged.

The Commissioner of C. Lands Dr Simpson J.P who occasionally sits at this Bench but who does not reside in the District & who is not entitled to a vote has at the request of the Resident Magistrate consented to preside Subject to the approval of His Excellency ... We therefore beg to bring this to the Notice of His Excellency the Governor to enable him to make such appointment should His Excellency approve thereof.
