having had to report such
irregularities, it gives me pleasure
to add, that of late the prisoners
have in general been behaving
well, and crime has been less
prevalent than at any other
period, since my arrival here.

5 ..... With reference to ex-
tending the terms of transpor-
tation to a penal Settlement,
I think it better to acquaint
You, that there are some men
serving here, in consequence of
their terms of transportation
having been extended, prior to
the passing of the Act of Council
dated 12th May 1830, and as an
idea exists amongst some of
them, that the Sentences under
which they are detained here,
are illegal, I think it better to
mention the circumstance, in
case it should have escaped
