said goodnight over and again and then melted in beside you. You wakened me sometime before daylight. Except your love, nothing seemed to matter, and I hated having to leave your soft warmth and gently passiveness so completely, to go out into the chill night into almost another world. If ever I had to say goodbye to you finally and forever, it would be just like that, only a thousand times more numbing. Even to say it for a year wrenched from me the greatest moral effort I ever knew - it will never happen ever again when we again become Masters of our own Destinies. We've had a lot of happy times darling but what's to come we've hardly dare to dream of.
I have never afforded to give you all I'd like. Many's the time I'd have wished you to wear orchids. War's left some ugly scars hereabouts, but yesterday I stumbled on a garden of blooming orchids still unspoiled. I brought home two stems and part of the plant, which I'll send you later. The flowers I'm pressing for you but I do wish they could reach you fresh.
I'm attached to Ralph Symonds crowdup here so you can imagine I'm well away from our own Hqrs. I'd do anything Nance to be releived but it's pretty hopeless.
