My dear Colonel-
You are probably aware that before the war, my husband built a house in the mountains, which was afterwards burned. In the spring of '66, I received a letter from Mr Fairbanks stating his wish to build at University Place, & his preference for the site in which we had built provided I had no intention of building there, he would like to obtain my consent to its occu pancy. Saying also that

private, & not to be acted on if any one has chosen that site_ I hope you will ex cuse the liberty I take in address ing you_ I do not wish to give any annoyance, & if there should be any trouble likely to arise from it, pray consider this letter unwritten _
