Bishop Polk, Richmond, Va., to Bishop Elliot, re: places he has visited in Virginia;
describing the Louisiana troops as "the flower of our youth"; his visit with Bishop
Meade and the great satisfaction with their conversation; the convention in
Montgomery, asking him to see that the Rev. John Fultonis made secretary,
expressing his doubt on being able to attend; the pressing request from President
Davis and the others to accept a commission in the Army; a feeling of embarrassment
because of the urgency; a consultation with Bishop Meade on the subject; his final
decision and acceptance; commenting that he would not resign his charge in the
Diocese of Louisiana - thathe would decline acting as Agent for the University
while the War lasts; tells of Col. Barney leaving for the War and his spending two
days with him at Swannee; his viewing the ashes of their burnt homes which
brought up the past and bereaved him; asking for the benefit of his brother's
prayers and asking him to write and tell him what he thought of the decision he has
