Yours of the 1st inst. did not reach me until after my return from my Convention, which met in adjourned session at Athens on the 10th of the month.
The enclosed printed document, containing such parts of my address as it was thought best to publish immediately; will furnish you my views & the action of my Diocese.
It is most probable that our council will meet once more; Either at Mobile or at some other

more central point at which place & time it is my intention to summon the Trustees of the UniVersity of the South to assemble. I agree with you that we should not let the University die, but leave all that we can, unimpacted to our success & happier times - By the rapid death of my Colleague I am now the Chancellor and the responsibility devolves upon me to see that things are kept in proper condition, even tho' we shall be able to make no onward movement.
I should be very glad if you could see to that matter of the Tax returns. The titles are I believe, all recorded in the proper

offices at Winchester. [?] & the originals are in the hands of Mr. [Bol?] = lard. By the time the Taxes are due (if we are not exempted from taxation entirely which I think that we are) we shall be able to scrape together money enough to pay them.
I shall endeavour to promise by the time of our meeting such information as will help us to form some conception of our fu= ture.
Your plan of building upon the mountain is, I think, one that would be agreeable to the Trustees of the University, as it would be very much to their advantage to have the fround occupied by a responsi-
