The preservation of these documents
has long been a source of anxiety
to me, and their security re-
quired guarded silence in the
matter of the University.
As to the condition of the subs [note: subscribers]
& their willingness to acknowledge
the continuance of their com-
mitments, I am unable to report
at present. How ever perhaps a-
ware that the notes are (with
the exception of $40,000, mort-
gage Paper given by the late Ex-
Govr Johnson, & of two other notes )
merely personal notes of hand.
It appears to me that until the
State of Tenn. is re-admitted into
the Union they wd be unwilling to
make any further effort, and
perhaps it may require a
complete restoration of the
