MARY AND JOSEPH MISSED THE BOY JESUS NEAR THIS SPOT

Ten miles north of Jerusalem, on a high transverse ridge from which the suburbs of the Holy city can be seen, are two villages : the Mohammedan El-Bireh and the Christian Ramallah. In olden days, because of the abundance of water at this spot on the highroad, this was a favorite stopping place for caravans bound for Samaria, Galilee, and Damascus. Fourteenth-century pilgrims decided that this was the spot where the 12-year-old Jesus was missed by Mary and Joseph. It is now only 20 minutes by automobile form the walls of the Holy City. Luke calls it a day’s journey, but the best part of the first day is often taken up with preparations.

The River Jordan.

The Stone we have from the Jordan was secured by Mrs. John M. Geer on a trip to Palestine and is supposed to have been from the spot where Jesus was baptized. The painting of the Baptism is in accordance with the ideas of the Greek Church.

RUSSIAN PRIESTS BLESSING THE RIVER JORDAN

Each year thousands of pilgrims from Russia journey to Jerusalem for the religious ceremonies. Each tried to carry back with him a bottle of water from the Jordan, a bit of palm leaf, or a flaming candle form the Holy Fire ceremony at Jerusalem.

Ur of the Chaldees

We find Ur of the Chaldees mentioned in Genesis 11:31. Recent excavations have unearthed the old city. The stone we have from Ur was given to use by Dr. Ruth J. Frank who secured it upon her return from medical service in India.

THE GREAT DEATH PIT IN THE CEMETERY AT UR

The large shaft grave in the foreground contained 74 human victims, 68 of them women (see text, page 123) The ancient surface lay about 20 feet above the floor level, which has here been reached. Also in the foreground is one of the trial pits, at the bottom of which the Great Flood deposit was discovered.

Flowers from Bethlehem, Palestine.

We are indebted to Mr. W. Freeland Kendrick, ex-Mayor of Philadelphia, for the pressed flowers from Bethlehem. These flowers add another sacred touch to our building. Mr. Kendrick also gave us the piece of wood from Independence Hall.

A STREET IN BETHLEHEM

More attractive than the high headdresses of the women ([text crossed out]) are the brightly colored orange turbans of the men.
