THE CAPITAL, AND ITS ENVIRONS, AT RICHMOND
When Thomas Jefferson was Mister for Frnace, he wrote from Nimes to a French friend: "Here I am gazing whole hours at the Maison Quaree
[Caree], like a lover at his mistress." Later he had oppurtunity to draw the plans and "crown Richmond's Capital Hill with a reproduction of the
ancient Roman temple on Gallic soil." The two smaller wings are moden additions.
