Hunt's Tavern, S.C.
We have two bricks from Hunt's Tavern on the King's Highway near Mt. Pleasant, S.C., which were kindly given to us by Mrs. D. E. McCuen, of Greenville. Mr. and Mrs. McCuen have been vitally interest in the work of the Y.M.C.A in Greenville for many years. Mr. McCuen served as president of the Board. The McCuen hut is named for him. Hunt's Tavern was a tavern of the early days of the country. Washington stopped and no doubt warmed himself in fron the fire in the old chimney from which the bricks we have were taken. I understand that Lafayette also stopped there but at this writing I have been unable to verify the statement. However we are glad of an opporutnity to include Lafayette in our book. His unselfish devotion to the cause of Liberty in the world and especially his service to the American colonies will always endear him to the citizens of the United States. He landed at Georgetown, S.C. when he first came to America. He took his first meal on American soil in the Huger home at Georgetown. The little Huer boy met him at that time. In later years when Lafayette was in prioson in Austria, the Huger youth was a student in that country. He endeavored to effect the escape of Lafayette. Lafayette became confused as to directions when his guard was overpower-ed and both Huger and Lafayette were put in prison. Later still when Lafayette made a triumphal tour of the Unnited States, he wanted Huger to share in his gifts from Congress. This Mr. Huger refused to do but rode, at the request of Lafayette, with him from Columbia to Charleston.
