DIXON D. DAVIS
SECRETARY

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
COMMITTEE ON MILITARY AFFAIRS
WASHINGTON, D.C.

June 18, 1930

Mr. John M. Holmes,
c/o Shriners' Hospital,
Greenville, S.C.

Dear Brother Holmes:

I am sending you by separate parcel a small
piece of marble which constituted a portion of the
floor of the Capitol at that part where fire broke
out on New Year's Eve night, 1929. I will try to
obtain a piece of stone from the new Memorial Bridge
and if possible from the Arlington estate, and send
them to you also. You can hardly realize how busy
we are now. I am on the go from six in the morning
till ten at night.

With kindest regards to Mrs. Holmes and your self,
I am

Yours very truly,
J.J. McSwain

Mr. McSwain picked up this piece of marble himself the morning
after the fire and sent it to our camp. Mr. McSwain has been most
helpful in making this lodge what it is. The many letters addressed
to him evidence his help and interest.
