James C. Self, Sr., recently selected
as "Man of the South for 1952" by the
magazine DIXIE BUSINESS, will be
honored at a banquet in Greenwood on
April 3. Mr. Self, president of Green-
wood Mills, has been widely acclaimed
throughout the South as a leading
industrialist and philanthropist. Dewey
H. Johnson is chairman of the arrange-
ments committee for the banquet, and
Robert C. Jackson, executive vice pres-
ident of the American Cotton Manu-
facturers Insitute, will deliver the
principal address.

Leland M. Craig was recently elect-
ed president of Southern Engineering
Co. of Charlotte, succeeding B. O.
Hood, retiring president. Mr. Craig
has been associated with the steel
fabricxating firm since 1916.

Southern Bell Telephone Co. has es-
tablished a seven-county district office
in Gastonia, according to an announce-
ment by H. G. Booth of Charlotte,
state manager. The new office will
serve the counties of Cleveland, Gas-
ton, Iredell, Lincoln, Catawba, Alex-
ander, and Rowan.

Hough-Wyle Co., appliance distrib-
utor of Charlotte, has been appointed
distributor for Deepfreeze home ap-
pliances. The line includes home
freezers, refrigerators, ranges and
water heaters.

Harold Atwood became the first cen-
tral purchasing agent for the City of
Greenville on March 1, it was an-
nounced recently by City Manager
Gerald W. Shaw.

Guy C. Cromer, chairman of the
board of Textron Southern, Inc., re-
tired on March 1 after 31 years in the
textile industry. He was an executive
of Gossett Mills when that firm was
purchased by Textron Southern and
was transferred to Anderson in 1950
to head the company's operations
there. He became chairman of the
board in May, 1952.

Hill Veneer Co. of Sylvania, Ga., has
been purchased by A. W. Welborn of
Waynesboro, Ga., and will be operated
under the name of Welborn Veneer
Co. Enlargement and remodeling of
the plant will be undertaken in the
near future.

Duplan Corp. of New York has pur-
chased the Saco-Lowell building on
South Mint Street in Charlotte and
will move its regional headquarters
from Hazelton, Pa. to Charlotte. Ap-
proximately 60 management and tech-
nical employees will be moved to Charlotte.

T. M. McNeill, well-known South
Carolina textile executive, has joined
Texize Chemicals, Inc., of Greenville
as a consultant for Texize customers
it was announced recently by W. J.
Greer, president.

W. H. Kelly, president of the Hol-
sum Baking Co., has been elected pres-
ident of the Gastonia Chamber of Com-
merce, succeeding Forest Abernathy.

Joe Reid Daniel, a native of Burns-
ville, N. C., has been named superin-
tendent of Textron Southern's new
throwing plant in Williamston, S. C.,
which is nearing completion.

Henry P. Goodwin, a native South
Carolinian and a graduate of Clemson
College, has been appointed Southern
District Sales Manager of Steel Heddle
Mfg. Co. His headquarters will be in
Greensboro, N. C.
