36 Ordinances of the City of Greenville.
any manner interfere with or destroy the fences around said Cemetery; and no person or persons shall wantonly disturb the springs in said Cemetery by throwing in sticks, stones or trash, or by washing the person or any article therein of any kind whatsoever; and no person or persons, shall enter the said Cemetery by climbing over the fence, or fences, enclosing the same, or in any other way than by the regular entrances thereto.
Sec. 2. And be it further ordained, That it shall not be lawful for any person, or persons to make any indecent exposure of his or her person, or to be guilty of any lewd or indecent act or behavior within the said Cemetery or the streets of the city.
Sec. 3. And be it further ordained, That any person who shall be found guilty of violating any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be subject to a fine of not less than one dollar for each and every offence, at the discretion of the Mayor. And it is hereby made the duty of Chief of Police and his assistants and the special policeman at the said Cemetery, to arrest all parties offending against the Ordinance and bring them before the Mayor, to be dealt with according to law.
Sec. 4. And be it further ordained, That it shall be unlawful for any loose or disreputable character, or any other person, to behave in any unseemly manner in Springwood Cemetery, at any time, to the annoyance of peaceable citizens.
Sec. 5. And be it further ordained, That this Ordinance shall take effect from and after the ratification thereof.

AN ORDINANCE in Reference to Vehicles Crossing Bridges Faster than a Walk.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, S.C., in Council assembled, that on and after the passage of this Ordinance, it shall not be lawful for any person or persons, on horseback or in a carriage, buggy or wagon of any description, to pass over any bridge spanning any stream within the City limits faster than a walk; and that any person or persons, violating this Ordinance shall be fined at the discretion of the Mayor, not exceeding five dollars for each and every offence. Done and ratified under the Corporate Seal of the said City of Greenville, S.C., on the twenty-sixth day of [in margin] (L.S.) AN ORDINANCE for the Better Observance of the Lord's Day.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, That from and after this date it shall not be lawful for any merchant, shop-keeper, or vender of goods, wares or merchandise, to open his, her or their place of business for the purpose of trade on the Lord's Day, save and except that druggists and apothecaries may keep open for the sale of drugs and medicines on that day, but shall not be allowed to sell wine or spirituous liquors upon such day, except for medical purposes, and then only under license and upon the written prescription of a practicing physician. Sec. 2. No bar-room, saloon, or other place where spirituous liquors are sold, shall be opened on the Lord's Day, for the sale, gift or barter of spitituous [spirituous] liquors, or malt liquors, or wine, or cider, or for any other purpose.

38 Ordinances of the City of Greenville. And it shall be unlawful for any person or persons, except the owner thereof, to enter on the Lord's Day any bar-room, saloon, or other place where spirituous liquors are sold. Sec. 3. Any person violating any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall, upon conviction, be liable to a fine of not less that five nor more than fifty dollars. Sec. 4. That it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to sell or deliver spirituous, vinous or malt liquors, or any preparation containing alcohol, within the incorporate limits of the City of Greenville, on the Sabbath day. It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to sell or deliver to any other persons any spirituous, vinous or malt liquors, or preparations containing alcohol, within the incorporate limits of the City of Greenville, on the Sabbath Day, as agent or otherwise, any spirituous, vinous or malt liquors, or procure for any other person or persons, any preparation containing alcohol, within the incorporate limits of the City of Greenville, on the Sabbath Day. AN ORDINANCE in Relation to Barber Shops. Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, and by the authority of the same, That on and after the adoption of this Ordinance, it shall not be lawful for any barber shop within the corporate limits of the City of Greenville, to be opened on the Sabbath day for the transaction of business. Sec. 2. That any person offending against this Ordinance shall be subject to a fine of five dollars.

AN ORDINANCE in Reference to Street Railway Company of the City of Greenville.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled, That the Street Railway Company of the City of Greenville be, and they are hereby, empowered to use the following named streets of the City of Greenville for the purpose of constructing the line of Street Railway upon which to run their freight and passenger cars, to-wit: Main, Washington, Augusta, Pendleton, Buncombe, College, Broad, Falls, and such other streets as the business of the City and the interest of the Company shall require.
Sec. 2. That for the purpose aforesaid they are empowered to build a double track upon Main or any other street in said City which the wants of the trade or the business of the Company may demand.
Sec. 3. That they are also hereby empowered to macadamize their said Railway track, if found necessary, and to lower the grade on the hills on both sides of the branch on Washington street, near the Air Line depot.
Sec. 4. That the exclusive privilege of using the streets of the City of Greenville for the purpose aforesaid is hereby granted to the Street Railway Company of the City of Greenville, for a period of twenty-one years. Provided, The main lines of the said Street Railway shall be completed within two years from the passage of this Ordinance.
Done and ratified in Council this the twenty-sixth day of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand [in margin] (L.S.) eight hundred and seventy-six, and under the Corporate Seal of the said City.

40 Ordinances of the City of Greenville.
An Ordinance Concerning Street Railway.
Section 1. Whereas The Greenville Street Railway Company have laid their track through certain streets granted by the City Council of Greenville, S. C., said Street Railway Company shall proceed to so arrange said track as to furnish no greater abstructions than is necessary to the free use and enjoyment of the streets.
Sec. 2. The Company shall pave or shell the track between the rails, and for as many feet, not exceeding two, on each side of the track or tracks as may be, and at such a time as may be required by the City authorities. And should this Company, or corporation, violate any of the provisions of this Section, they shall be liable to such penalties as the Mayor may impose, not exceeding fifty dollars for each and every day they shall be proven to have violated the same, after due notice given by the City authorities.
Sec. 3. Such Company shall employ competent, careful, sober, and prudent drivers, who shall use all exertions to avoid collisions, giving due notice to the drivers of other vehicles to prevent the same; and any infraction of this Section shall be punished by a fine of such a sum as the Mayor may impose, not exceeding twenty-five dollars. This fine shall not exempt the Company from the penalties and responsibilities of such violations or act committed by the drivers, conductors, or officials; and it shall be the duties of the drivers of all vehicles to leave the track on the approach of the cars, and in no way unecessarily obstruct the progress of the same; and any person violating any part of this Section shall be punished by a fine in such sums as the Mayor may impose, not exceeding twenty-five dollars.
Sec. 4. Every car on the road shall have the number of the car painted on each side in such a manner and place as may be plainly seen, and shall carry at night a lamp in front and rear, and shall be fully and properly lighted inside, and shall have a bell attached to each horse, [cont. to next page]
