Treasurer, and the tax paid, and a license or badge
taken out for the remainder of the year, under a penalty
of two dollars on the owner or keeper of such dog, or
the person on whose premises the dog may be found;
and any dog at any time found in the City shall be
deemed and taken to be kept therein and liable to the
tax aforesaid, and it shall be the duty of the Chief of
Police and his assistants to ascertain all such persons
as have failed to make their returns as required herein.
Sec. 4. And be it further ordained, That nothing in this
Ordinance contained shall be construed as applying to
dogs of strangers passing through the City.
Sec. 5. And be it further ordained, That this Ordinance
shall take effect from and after the 1st day of January, 1876.
Done and ratified under the Corporate Seal of the said
City of Greenville, on the twenty-second day of

AN ORDINANCE to Alter and Amend an Ordinence [Ordinance]
Entitled "An Ordinance Concerning Dogs."
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the City of Greenville, That it shall be unlawful for
any dog owned by a citizen of said City, running at
large in the streets of the said City, unless such dog shall
wear a collar with a badge or license attached thereto,
which shall have been procured from the City Treasurer,
as provided in an ordinance entitled, "An Ordinance
Concerning Dogs," ratified 22d November, A.D. 1875.
Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That any dog so found
running at large without such collar shall be impounded
three days, and unless the owner shall claim and pay
into the City Treasury of the City a fine of one dollar
on the same, it shall be the duty of the Police to destroy
said dog.
