COL. S. W. MINOR,
Commanding 120th Infantry, 30th Division.

WELCOME-BY COLONEL HOLMES B. SPRINGS
(Continued from page five.)

one well-attested fact in your career. To you, with your gallant
brothers-in-arms, history will accord the distinction of having
broken the unbreakable Hindenburg Line, and made the final
breach in those defenses which Prussian vanity and arrogance had
proclaimed impregnable.

Fellow soldiers, you have returned with vivid memories of
those tragic days; those horror-haunted nights at Ypres, Bellicourt,
Montrehain, La Salle River, Voormezelle, Buorgny, La Rochelle
and Brancourt, those altars where patriotism and courage
laid costly sacrifices, those sepulchres wher [where] slumber the deathless
dead; but with these sad memories you bring, too, the conscious-
ness of duty faithfully done and a trust honorably fulfilled.

You have laid aside the khaki to don once more the civilian's
garb. From black clouds you are once more entering the sunshine
of peace. May I not remind you of one thing? You and the mil-
lions of heroes who fought with you have won a priceless victory;
but its fruits are not to be had for the plucking. The warfare of
gun and shell, of tank and air-plane, is ended, but the warfare for
the realization and consolidation of its social, politica and spiri-
tual results is still raging in every land. Humanity, bleeding, sum-
moned you to her rescue from death and dishonor. Humanity,
victorious, now summons you to bind up her wounds. You have
shattered the power of autocracy; you are now to take up the
fight to make democracy just, righteous, efficient and self-controll-
ed. The problems of Peace are as complex and difficult as those
of War. They involve the practice of patience, of mutual symp-
thy, forbearance and helpfulness, the development of the social
conscience, the strengthening of our political ideals. In a word,
the consecration of all our faculties and powers to the sober and
conscientious performance of the duties of citizenship, to the end
that there may be ushered in on Earth an era of equal rights for
all, in every sphere of life. You have come back with a vision of
a new world order. Are you not going to strive to make that a
vision of reality? Are you not, indeed, pledged by your own record
to plunge into this new struggle with the same ardor which swept
you into the other?

Some of the conditions existing today have no place in a sane,
well ordered society. They offer to mankind no hope for the bet-
terment of life's hard conditions, or for the uplifting and healing
of Nations. Intolerance, class hatred, disgust, selfishness, in-
justice must be eliminated. Truth, fair dealing, equality, of oppor-
tunity, community of interest and purpose, and brotherly coop-
eration in all the processes of civil life must be the standards by
which we shall measure our conduct and to which we shall conform
our thoughts and actions.

My comrades, I extend to you again a most cordial and sincere
welcome to the great state of South Carolina, where her people
will carry for all times the sincerest memories of your brave deeds
and glorious achievements. I solicit again your continued efforts
and cooperation in all matters pertaining to the betterment of
the civil, political, industrial, commercial and social life in your
respective communities, whereby the processes of reconstruction,
now necessary, may be hurriedly and finally prosecuted to a quick
and permanent adjustment that we may enjoy for all time to
come the peace, happiness and prosperity that have been ours in
the years gone by. May the sun shine for each and every one of
you always.
