Eating houses had opened up and hot smells drifted on the night breeze, chairs and benches were set outside some of them in the wider streets and dozens of natives were sitting and standing for the evening meal. Trestle tables were along the pavements (where streets had such luxuries,) and more merchandise was piled high on them, and even spilled onto the gutters.
Scruffy little boys dodged about the tourists who were filtering into the back roads, and tried to persuade them to "come on" into this or that little shop. Some of the shops were so tiny that there was barely room for two customers at the same time, and
