General Affidavit Territoy of New Mexico, County of Santa Fe', ss: In the matter of The claim No. 1159255, of Newton Jackson of Santa Fe' New Mexico On this second day of December, A. D. 1896, personally appeared before me a notary public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths Anderson Chapman aged 64 years, a resident of Santa Fe', in the County of Santa Fe', and territory of New Mexico whose Post-Office address is Santa Fe' New Mexico __, aged __ years, a resident of __ __, in the County of __ and State of __, whose Post-office address is __ ____ well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: that he is personally well acquainted with Newton Jackson the aboved named (Note.-Affiants should state how they gain a knowledge of the facts to which they testify.) Applicant for a pension under the laws of the United States and has known him since the year 1862, prior to his entering the service of the United States as a private of Company D. 18th regiment United States Colored Infantry, and also knew him as a soldier in said company and regiment during his service as such that his first acquaintance with said Newton Jackson was in Kansas City Missouri up to the time of his enlistment, of which time he was a very young man, in vigoris and perfect health and condition. Affiant says that he, affiant, served as a soldier in the sixteenth regiment United States Colored Infantry for two years and was a prisoner of war that the two regiments were, during the said time frequently together and he often said and joked to the said Newton Jackson that he having escaped from prison, met the said Newton Jackson in St Louis MO, last in the year 1865 and found him suffering from rupture of the bowel which said Jackson described to him and exhibited to him, and which deemed to affaint to be very severe and serious, very seriously affecting and potentally dis abling him, and rendering him wholly incapable of manuel labor or any considerable

General Affidavit Territory of New Mexico County of Santa Fe Sworn to and subscri before me, this Second day of December A.D. 1896 by the above named Anderson Chapman and I certify that said Affidavit was fully read and explained to the said affiant before he executed the same. And I certify that I am in no wise interested in said case nor concerned in its prosecution, and that said affiant is personally known to me and that he is a credible person. Affaint says he again met and knew the said Newton Jacksonat Kanas City Mo. in the month of May 1866 When, he was still suffering from said rupture Affiant says that he was discharged from the service at Fort Selden, New Mexico in the month of July 1868, and that a few weeks thereafter he met the said Newton Jackson at Las Vegas New Mexico, and (?) that time forth the claimant and affiant have resided in the territory of New Mexico, and have frequent ly been together, and have met almost daily - that during all of the time the said Newton Jackson has suffered from the effects of said rupture, and still so suffers to such and extent as to be wholly incapable of manual labor. Affiant says that during all the time the said Newton Jackson, has been of good habits, sobriety orderly and well behaved, and that the affiant has no interest in the claim for pension of said Newton Jackson except the desire that a worthy and deserving man who faithfully served the country as a soldier should obtain what the laws of the country entitle him to receive. Affiant says, that his foregoing statement and affidavit was all written for him in his presence by Mr.William Breeden, in offices at Santa Fe' New Mexico, between the hours of ten and eleven O'clock in the forenoon of Wednesday December 2nd A.D. 1896, when where and to whom he made his statement and that in making the same orally and that in making the same he was not (?) or assisted by any written statement or memorandum, nor by any suggestion by any person, but made the same of his own unassisted knowledge and recollection.
