Home Secretary's Office Brisbane 5th December, 1923.

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that it is proposed to prepare an index of the names of Queensland places and, if possible, to ascertain the origin of the names of each place.

There is a difficulty regarding places having aboriginal names, and it is desired that you get in touch with as many as possible of the older natives in your District, with a view of obtaining a list of the places in your District having aboriginal names, together with the meaning of the aboriginal words.

I shall be glad if you will submit information in the following form, and post it to me at your convenience.

I have to advise in reference to the attached letter from the Under Secretary,Home Secretary's Office, Brisbane,re places in this District having Aboriginal names, that I have made inquiries throughout the District and have ascertained that there are no places bearing Aboriginal names.

In reply to your memo of the 6th instant: to [hand on ever sa?] and previous correspondence, [anent?] Aboriginal names of places & origin [span?]. I beg to advise that I have been endeavouring to obtain the [?] particulars but found it is hard to find any one who can give any particular as most of the old natives have either died or left the district however, I hope to be able to obtain some f? information from outlying posts which of [?] I cannot visit for this [?] special purpose, & when same is forthcoming I will forward on to you.
