Office of Protector of Aboriginals [Winton] I3th March I924

Sir/

Referring to your memorandum of the 6th instant relative to list of aboriginals names of places in the [Winton] district and their meaning, unfortunately I have no old aboriginals in this district who can help me in this matter, I have only two old boys here and both were born about Brisbane, and can not suppiy any information, I have also been in touch with the Local Shire clerk [Mr Wilson] and he informs me that the same request was made from him some time ago but he could not supply the required information,

" I have however forwarded the list to Constable [Dunne] who is stationed at the [Diamantina Lakes] and where the only blacks camp in the district exists, he has about half a dozen old blacks there who I beleive belong to this District and he may be able to get some information from them, as soon as he returns the list to me I will forwardxx it to you.

Office of Protector of Aboriginals [Winton] I8th April I924

Sir/

Referring to the attached correspondence in which you ask for certain information regarding aboriginal names and their meanings in the [Winton] district, I am extremely sorry that I cannot do anything with the matter here for the reason that there are none of the old blacks in this District who can supply me with any of the required information, all the boys at [Winton] are young men who were not born in this district and the majority of them never lived in camps but were all reared by white people, The only old blacks here is an old boy and his gin, both these were born in the Southern Division and know nothing about the names of places here,

" As there are about half a dozen old blacks camped near the [Diamantina lakes] Station I forwarded the papers to Const . [Dunne] of that station but he has also been unable to do any good with the matter, I am attaching his letter,

" I might also point out that I have had an interview with [Mr T.J.Wilson] the local Shire Clerk and he informed me that a similiar request was forwarded him some time ago, and although he wrote to the different station owners in the district which have stations have aboriginal names but, he could do no good with the matter.

Yours obediently [W N Langusests?] Protector [Winton]

[Ma?p? Junction] 13th April. 1924

The Protector of Aboriginals [Winton]

Sir

Your Memo of the 7/4/24. just arrived here to night with the mail. the mail being few days late. I am very sorry I have to return the list of the aboriginal names and meanings, with out being able to do any good with them, the old Blacks here are really too old to get any satisfaction at all out off and the one or two young ones that are working in the District at the present time are away really, it is a harder matter to get hold of those names and their meanings that a person would think.

However it I will keep the matter in mind & if at any time I can get some I will forward them into you.
