Dear Sir /

In reply to your Memorandum of the 6th Instant I beg to advise that there are no Aboriginals in this district, either old or young, and I am therefore unable to obtain any information from Aboriginals regarding Aboriginal place names and their meanings.

I have spoken to a number of the older. residents of this district regarding the origin of place names about this locality but they were unable to give me any assistance in the matter.

I have to inform you that there is only two aged Aboriginals in this district, I have interviewed them but they are too old, and dont seem to know the meanings of the different places in this district.

I beg to report re your Memo above that I am endevouring to have the list of aboriginals names and meanings completed but the matter is a little difficult as all the old abos are now on a walk about. However I will have the matter attended to as soon as possible and forward on to you I regeret this delay but is it unavoidable.

I beg to report in reference to the attached letter from the Under Secretary I have made inquiries from all the old Aboriginals here but none of them knew of any Aboriginnames about the District. I have also interviewed Station owners and old residents of the District and they informed me that they never knew of any places about [Ayr] having Aboriginal names.

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that it is proposed to prepare an index of the names of Queensland places and, if possible, to ascertain the origin of the names of each place.

There is a difficulty regarding places having aboriginal names, and it is desired that you get in touch with as many as possible of the older natives in your District, with a view of obtaining a list of the places in your District having aboriginal names, together with the meaning of the aboriginal words.

I shall be glad if you will submit information in the following form, and post it to me at your convenience.
