with 228 men in first year science. "Intra-murally the Department
of Mathematics had to deal with 576 students; English with 666;
Physics with 472; Chemistry with 706. In the face of all this,
additional instructors had to be secured and some duplicate
apparatus. It was seriously considered whether it might not
be necessary to hold some sections of the classes in the evening.

Added to this, the Extra-mural work was getting heavier,
and so was the Summer School. But that is only saying
that things were going well. Every Faculty of the University
was taking up extra time and work to meet the needs of the
men returned from overseas.

Another of the cheering features of that April meeting was
the announcement that million dollars New Endowments
was in sight - as good as in hand. $500,000.00 from
Chancellor Douglas; $250,000.00 promised from
other sources, and revenue therefrom would begin to come
in the following autumn. The revenue of the University
the year before was $402,000, an unimaginable sum to
the men who guided the institution in the fifties and sixties,
and even some decades later, and yet there was a deficit.
Private liberality may have reached its limit, and somehow
the Province must come to recognize, in a more substantial
way than hitherto, the great work Queen's was
doing in the social and intellectual upbuilding of
