I think reading "owe" instead of "serve" on the previous page makes sense of the letter as it stands.
That sounds right. This looks like the answer to one of JB's congratulatory letters to another author, which were always appreciated. Perhaps JB had read 'The Decline and Fall of the Romantic Ideal' that was published in 1936.
Or 'The Golden Cockerel Greek Anthology' of 1937.
