D[earest] John. Your letter such a pleasure & such a refresher to me on my horrid bed. Yes! I've somehow tumbled down quite a lot of steps in life since I saw you. But [I've stepped out on] a sort of landing now & the Drs think they can keep me there for quite a bit & I hope they can. Of course I have been going down a bit all this last winter, but lots of the time I was really quite well & very happy with you all, so there's nothing to complain of.
