Dear Mr Buchan,

I have just read your Montrose & I can't resist sending you one line (wh. I hope you wont think an impertinence) to tell you how admirable it is. It has

been the deepest interest to me to read it though that interest is mingled with such a sense of shame at my ancestors conduct. It is a horrid story of betrayal & ignominy & from my earliest

youth the fact that Earl George betrayed Montrose & Earl [?] left Charles Edward before Culloden has always made me ashamed of my descent from them. The old prisons at Brahan where Montrose was taken after Assynt are still in existence & are here used as

cellars - I know every inch of that country & you can hardly realise how more than delightful your book has been to me.
