Dear Col. Buchan
I am much delighted with your able History of the R.S.F.
But I regret to see that my very dear old old Friend General Dalyell name has been spelt with a z. I send you a page 3 extracted from a monthly army list during the period Lt Genl. Dalyell (John Thomas) was full Colonel of the R.S.F which shows this. also 3a from the RSF assocn. list of

not a Lieut: Colonel when I sent you sundry papers, I am a Colonel in the Army of 25th August 88 and further comm[an]ded The 21st Regimental District (RSF) from the 21st January 1891 till I reached the age limit when Col C.E. Browne succeeded me in the 21st R Dist.
The Reg[imen]tal Districts were started when the Regts were localised
The 1st C.O. was Col W. Forbes McBean from the St Helena Regt.
2nd - Col Allan fr the Welch Regt.
3rd - Col Bainbridge R S.F
4th - Col F.G. Jackson R S.F
5th - Col E.C. Brown R S.F
6th - Col W.A. Yule (PSC.) R S F
7th - Col E.E. Carr C.B. R S F.
Then the Regt. Districts were discontinued & I think Col. Carr was made officer in charge of Records in [H?]
I also send you an extract of my record, copied from 1895 Annual Army List.
also a copy, on the same paper, of annual Army list 1819 giving the Colonel's list of succession as Regards the 21st Regt of Foos [Fusilier.
and the Colonels of the same Regt from the time I joined in March 1858 until now.
Col: Hamilton I have not the dates of he came after Sir De Lacy Evans death, & before F. Marshal Haines' appointment
(Of course I know all about the old Scots "z" having the value of "y" English.) Kirkgunzeon & so on.

Collingwood was senior Captain for 10 years John Ramsay & Col. Dalyell commanded between them 25 years and we did not want them to go it was a happy Regt.
